Movie remakes (not sequels) that you'd like to see, or that wouldn't make you sneer at for messing with greatness….

Spies Like Us immediately popped into my head. A good, funny movie, but not on the Pantheon of untouchable classics

Very interesting question, but my answer is none. CGI, over-choreographed action scenes, modern music, and lightening fast cuts would damage the integrity of the original in almost every case.

The Last Starfighter is a good example. The original was a nerd-level cult classic, but modern day CGI would be insulting to the greatness of the original.

Streets of Fire would be cool, but those iconic fight scenes with the sledghammers would be ruined. And replacing the classic 70s/80s style rock with modern day pop would hurt me.

Maybe something like The Burbs or the Money Pit with no action, CGI, or notable music, but can you really replace a young Tom Hanks? I do like seeing nods to classics like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles vs. Due Date.

My other problem is that when I watch 80s teen movies now, I'm always thinking "Where the F are the parents?!" and "Why is the principal / cop / boss / etc. so dumb!?"

Or you could just rewatch the original. Who out there is going to do it better than JCVD?

The burbs
The Money Pit
Mr Mom
The Great Outdoors

All could be ripe for modern remakes, if the right casts were assembled.
But putting in a flavor of the month "it" actor in any of them and you've doomed it from the start.

This is the only correct answer.

Every other suggestion in this thread is awful, and you should all feel awful for making them.

So the right answer is to let Blumhouse spoonfeed the market with even MORE horror genre, mix in a few Disney/Marvel/Star Wars flops, and a unique movie every 5-7 months, instead of going to the well and updating stories from 40 years ago that were fun, but not bulletproof.

cool, cool...

48 Hours is perfection and you could never make it with the same non-PCness. Leave it alone.

Murphy and Nolte were a perfect antagonistic buddy duo.

You should get your head checked out for bringing that up. I'm not even a Star Wars fan, but I'm old enough to remember that being complete trash :-)

But why? It's perfect just the way it is. Also, you can't cast it better than Arnold and the overweight badguy in the mesh shirt. That's just epic levels of awesomeness you can never duplicate!

Sure...

  • The neurotic kid curled up in a ball in the corner cuz she just can't deal with this, keeps hitting herself and eventually gets taken to the nurse and excused because of the abusive treatment
  • The popular girl is apoplectic cuz she has to give up her phone and she feels like she is being ostracized from the world
  • The jock pulling a power play with the coach getting him out of it and he smugly walks out
  • The nerd secretly using his augmented reality glasses to do his homework by eye twitches and finger pads, he writes the BS assignment for detention using AI and submits it electronically
  • The bad boy sneaks a vape in and is stoned the whole time not a care in the world
None of them ever speak a word to each other. Great movie.

Conan the Barbarian.

Already been done, released in 2011 or thereabouts, starring Jason Momoa. Boring as hell and not worthy of even Conan the Destroyer (which sucked). Conan The Barbarian is perfect as is.

Remaking some of these movies just to remake them is dumb. Wait until Gen X is all dead, please.

The only ones that should be considered are the ones on here that were bad the first time. Maybe you give them a second chance to do better. Maybe.

Exception to that is Alf - one of the dumbest, worst shows ever created and that poster should be permabanned for even suggesting it be remade. It should be forgotten and purged from history.

Highly disappointing. I was at least excited about the casting but it sucked.

The only change I would have made to the original movie would have been to swap out Rae Dawn Chong for Tanya Roberts
