Yearly
...and usually multiple times each
Christmas Vacation
A Christmas Story
Elf

Most Years
Trading Places
Santa Clause - The Movie (first half - until not long after Dudley Moore leaves)
Arthur Christmas
Home Alone
Love Actually - I avoid it more and more. Used to really like it but too many depressing storylines. Trending to 2+.
Klaus - like this one but I foresee it becoming 2+
Grinch - at least one of Jim Carey or 2018 animated version
Snowball Express - not a Christmas movie but I associate with Christmas either because that's when it was on Disney when I was a kid or I thought it was and only watch during the holidays.

2+ Years
Babes in Toyland - loved as a kid but tougher today - a lot more nursery rhyme/musical than I remembered.
Bad Santa
Die Hard

Recent Additions - frequency TBD
Four Christmases - after watching earlier this season I think it'll probably become Yearly or Most.
Red One - haven't hit this year but last year we really loved it. I bet it settles into a Most category.

Another Christmas-adjacent movie that is pretty good is "Serendipity," with Jonn Cusack and the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale ... which interestingly, also starts Jeremy Piven, like "The Family Man."

Had no idea so many people consider Trading Places a Christmas movie. For the record I do not. But Die Hard IS a Christmas movie.

Both were released in July making them non traditional releases for Christmas movies anyway. But Die Hard has several things that Trading Places does not.

- the entirety of Die Hard takes place at a Christmas work party
- only one sequence of Trading Places is during a Christmas work party in which Winthorpe gets very drunk and crashes it as Santa

- Die Hard contains a lot of Christmas music both in the soundtrack (Christmas in Hollis) and various characters humming Christmas tunes
- Trading Places contains minimal Christmas music, briefly in the background during the Christmas party and at Ophelia's apartment as she decorates a tree

Significant parts of Trading Places take place after Christmas and through New Years culminating on the first trading day after New Years and a coda of sorts on a tropical beach sometime later.

Die Hard basically revolves around a family reunification for John. Trading Places isn't about family or kids at all, although certainly some friendships develop.

Lots of other minor stuff in Die Hard like the wrapping tape playing a part of the finale, the Ho Ho Ho shirt, the fake snow at the end with Ode To Joy and Let It Snow playing.

I don't know. Just my opinion man but I've really never heard Trading Places called a Christmas movie and I would watch it anytime with little realization it is Christmas oriented at all really.

Love the movie but don't consider it Christmas either. Adjacent - sure.

Only maybe 25% is at Christmas: the way the meet initially while shopping and then a brief scene at the end again re-enacting that encounter sort of. Otherwise it takes place over several years and mostly spring/summer type scenes. Also released in October.

But it is one of my favorite of the rom com type. Molly Shannon and Jeremy Piven are both great as their besties.

I believe this movie is playing in the background of a scene in The Family Stone.

That it is.

The Family Stone is criminally underrated. It might be my favorite Christmas movie.

For kids/family:
Arthur Christmas rules. Cool take on the 'Santa' story and 'Grandpa Santa' is hilarious
Klaus (on Netflix) - this one pulls on my heartstrings. Cool animation, great story. Watch it every year.
A Muppets Christmas Carol - Idk why but I think this is my favorite version of the Dickens classic. The combination of Michael Caine as a serious dramatic actor playing off ****ing muppets is a combination that has no right being as good as it is. Another yearly tradition for our house.

For adults:
4 Christmases w/Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn. The recreation of the Nativity scene with Vince as Joseph is 1 of the funniest things I've ever watched.
Bad Santa (obvs)
Lord of the Rings - I know, it has nothing to do with Christmas but it was originally released in December and there's something cozy about watching these movies during the holidays.

I have 6 must watch, one is a recent addition. A few others I also usually watch.

BTW Trading Places is not a Christmas movie, but Die Hard is. TP barely has any xmas stuff other than drunk Santa almost killing himself. Neither is Harry Potter really. DH is set at a Christmas party has a Christmas soundtrack, fake snow, xmas decor and multiple christmas references throughout.

Anyway.

Must watch:
  • Die Hard - always first already saw it this year
  • A Christmas Story - also already watched this year
  • Scrooged
  • A Christmas Vacation - already watched this year
  • The Holdovers - new to the list 2 or 3 years ago but so good
  • Love Actually
Also usually will see these although I don't make it a point to:
  • The Grinch - Jim Carrey version
  • How The Grinch Stole Christmas - animated TV special
  • Elf
  • Home Alone
  • A Christmas Story Christmas - newer addition, the sequel is not bad very nostalgic for a nostalgic movie
Don't care for these - don't really like the "classics"
  • It's a Wonderful Christmas
  • The Polar Express
  • White Christmas
  • Miracle on 34th Street
  • A Christmas Carol in any form

Especially now that I have kids, every year I wonder why Polar Express hasn't been remade. Seems there is a lot of potential there and it's a good story. But that movie is so damn creepy.

I disagree. Much of the movie has Christmas decorations if not prominent then in the background scenes. It bleeds into NYE to setup the NYSE scene. A huge part of the story arc is Dan Akroyd's Christmas Eve meltodwn at the party leading to his re-introduction to Eddie via Ophelia.

Man Four Christmases is one of the most underrated Christmas movies out there.

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn are great but throw in Robert Duval, Tim McGraw, and Joh Favreau as trailer trash and Dwight Yoakum as the preacher and it's one of our favorites we watch every year.

Macaulay Culkin has declared Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. (Skip to the lightning round chapter.)

Also, a good watch in general. Especially his stuff at the end about being a proud father and breaking the cycle of abuse.

Haven't heard it mentioned, but Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire is a good one.

It's where Irvin Berlin's song White Christmas was first introduced.

I will update this with movies / tv we have watched thus far related to the holiday and what's on tap, not a rating system by any means.

1. Home Alone
2. 8 Bit
3. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
4. Some Hallmark movie where a girls parents are selling their inn behind her back to an investor... who she happens to be falling for
5. A Charlie Brown Christmas
6. A Christmas Story (I'll admit it - got up and did dishes during this)

On tap in the next few days:
Christmas Vacation
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Hawkeye mini series, a favorite of the kids - I dare you to not say "Kate Bishop" with an accent 100x.

Literally just watched Bad Santa last night for the first time.

I think it was released at a time when I never would have seen it due to only going to kids movies then - my kids were 8 and 5 in 2003.

It's funny. Not going to be in my regular rotation of christmas movies. But it had moments.

I saw there was also a sequel but I'm wary.

I've now finished both Bad Santa (I'd give it a middling B-) and Bad Santa 2 (which is surprisingly better, I'd give it a B+). BS2 is helped by the presence of Kathy Bates as Billy Bob's mom adding another comic element. She's more of a messed up train wreck than he is and pulls off sweet Mrs. Claus while doing some bad things. It also includes Christina Hendricks in a smaller role and pretty messed up as usual. The level of sex jokes, cussing, and midget insults is off the charts. Gold.

Neither will find a place in my usual xmas rotation but I enjoyed them for what they were.
