I signed up for Paramount+ to see Landman and figured I'd catch the latest season of SP that just dropped. It's pretty much just TDS every episode. The satire of Trump with Garrison years ago was brilliant. And most importantly funny so it's not political with me. But this is really lazy. Basically just recycled bits from Saddam/Satan and the same jokes late night comedy and SNL were doing almost 10 years ago. I don't even care if they do the usual "attack everyone" thing. They can attack one side for all I care as long as they maintain that edge and on brand ability to make you think and laugh. But that's not here. Almost like they are just mailing it in at this point.

They got their payday. Either they mailed it in jimbo style and don't care anymore, or they're being told what to put on the show by their new employers.

Regardless, it's unwatchable now.

It was pretty bizarre, especially after saying they weren't going to do more Trump stuff in September 2024 because it's tired. Then we got a whole season of recycled Trump and repurposed Sadaam/Satan jokes

I have watched the entire series at least a dozen times and gave up on the recent episodes completely because they feel lazy and hateful instead of satirical.

They had a whole episode this season talking about how South Park sucks now so they agree with OP

Did they?

Every reference to Simpsons comes with people saying they haven't watched in a long time. Maybe they have rerun the same jokes for a new audience, I surely don't know.

I know most on here won't be able to entertain the thought, but what if the satire is deserved and necessary?

The country is in an incredibly dangerous position right now and that some are still willing to call it out is a good thing.

In that case, thank God for South Park telling recycled jokes that will save the country.

That raises a curious question though. If Trump is so dangerous, why weren't they doing it before he was elected? Nothing we've seen from Trump is a surprise. Not only did they not do any, they said they didn't because it's tired.

It's lazy writing, not champions for democracy.

Do you really think telling the same recycled Trump jokes from 10 years ago will stop it? Is there a particular reason why they cant satirize Trump AND be funny/introspective in a way only South Park ever could?

Sometimes I think some of these celeb types must sit around in their social circles and obsess about the orangeman with each other so much that they've lost perspective on other topics and how to be funny. It's like one giant 9 year circle jerk and their skills have dulled.

Bottom line the trump stuff just isn't funny and forced. I think they are partly tapped out but there is some light TDS going on.

South Park is on all morning long today, 2011 season and it's night and day different from the newer ones.

They (Trey and Matt) have the same buddy/buddy lawyer as Hunter Biden. This lawyer helped them cement their billion dollar deal with Paramount+.

It was bound to happen eventually. The amount of work they put into the show to keep it relevant is crazy. They had to work nonstop over the weekends just to get the episodes finished in time to air. Now that they are fabulously rich beyond their wildest imaginations I bet they aren't investing as much effort into the show.

I don't have much of a dog in this fight, but two observations:

1. The satire is probably deserved and may be necessary, but that doesn't excuse the satirist from making it funny.
2. It's no doubt true that the country is in an incredibly dangerous position, but the country is always in an incredibly dangerous position. I just finished reading a history of antebellum America, and while some of the specifics have changed (we're not really fighting over slavery, thankfully), you'd be surprised at how many things stay the same. There were decades long fights about tariffs, and multiple brouhahas about the limits of Presidential power, both domestically and internationally.

It's the song that never ends - twenty years from now, Democrats will rehabilitate Trump in comparison to whatever new Republican runs for office, and Republicans will do the same for Obama and Biden.

Matt/Trey got tired of South Park 15 years ago and quit trying for the most part. They've admitted as much in interviews and documentaries but kept milking the cash cow as long as they could, even if episodes were rushed and the writing was sub-par. It was actually on-brand for them, like they were getting an easy payday and sticking it to the corporations without trying so it worked pretty well.

Then they started slowing down during COVID with just a couple "specials" a year and didn't want to renew the series but Paramount threw them a 5-year $1.5 BILLION dollar contract. I can't imagine they care what how good/bad the content is at all anymore with that payday, which is sad because they used to be pretty adamant about keeping the show's quality and artistic integrity in tact to some extent.

Now they're the same over-paid celebrities that they built their careers exposing and they've been reduced to orange-man-bad jokes about a decade after they're worth using... It's tipped from "sticking it to the man and still getting paid" to "we just want the money and wgaf about the writing" and it shows.

I'm as big as a South Park fan as there is. Have loved most of the stuff that Matt and Trey have done, including book of Mormon and we are the most underrated movies ever team America.

But even I'll say it seems like they're just taking low hanging fruit and making recycled jokes. If you re-watched some of the old classic episodes like Casa Bonita… this season is like a completely different show.

I really thought they had something going when they started doing the 67 joke but then it just went right back into the political stuff. They could've made an entire episode out of the 67.

I've laughed pretty hard during most of this season. Towlie suffering as Trump's c** rag...Donald's facial expressions...Vance as Tattoo, just to get started.

Same, saw the 67 stuff and was like "okay here we go, old south park is back". Nope, went right to a Trump ***** size joke with the devil.

Some of this season was funny. However, I was disappointed. South Park prides itself of going after everyone. Oddly enough, I don't recall a single instance of them going after senile Biden.
They paid for their wars with your tax dollars and also with your untaxed dollars. Inflation is theft.

They definitely left a lot on the table with the dementia, kid sniffing, pants ****ting with the Pope, coke in the white house, everything Hunter. I don't even care about that though. Just do something funny instead of doing what late night comedy did which is become obsessed with one topic and recycled jokes

I am shocked, shocked that Texags didn't enjoy this season of South Park.

That said, I really didn't enjoy the through line about trying to kill a pregnancy. That was largely too dark to land laughs on my end. It also just didn't really go anywhere or deliver on its buildup. It's like they had a funny start in mind and thought they'd figure out the rest as they went along, but then just couldn't come anywhere close enough to sustaining it let alone nailing the landing.
Thanks and gig'em

I think the consensus has been that Trump jokes would have been fine but at least be 1. original and 2. funny in the style South Park is known for.

Do you think they did that?

I was in high school when this came out and we had to go to a friend's house who had a different cable provider because the main one for New Braunfels didn't carry Comedy Central.

I was a loyal viewer for a very long time before starting to lose interest around season 18. I'd watch some episodes here or there but it just wasn't the same as Make Love, Not Warcraft, Ginger Kids, The Death of Eric Cartman etc. I think it really started to hit it's stride midway though season 6 with the Lord of the Rings and was peak television until the end of season 10.

I was also a fan of The Stick of Truth and need to play The Fractured but Whole.

My time in undergrad and grad school (2000-2007) was peak for sure. There was a long run of time where they averaged 2.5-4.0MM views per episode. Now they are lucky to get 1/10th that.

I think they are just lazy because there are non-stop topics to integrate into their shows. They peaked at Human Centipede.

Just a wild ass guess: Matt and Trey probably started feeling that the right had staked a claim on South Park due to years of mocking woke ideology. I think this season was their attempt to "balance the scales" and to prove they don't belong in either camp.
