In that vein, "Empty Glass" by Gary Stewart is haunting knowing his story.

Neither of these fall into traditional country, but are two of the most beautifully written songs I've ever heard. Surprisingly I think the non-acoustic versions of both are better.

I'll throw in my vote for Stay by Sugarland and Travelin' Soldier (originally written and recorded by Bruce Robison, number 1 hit for the Dixie Chicks, and now rereleased by Cody Johnson).

I recently heard the Cody Johnson version and realized I had forgotten how much I like that song.

Sawyer Brown "The Walk"

I first heard this song when I was 23 years old, seeing my father take that last walk with his dad. Over the years, I took that walk with my dad, and now he's been gone for a little over a year.

That song changes it's meaning to you over your lifetime.

You arent kidding.

There have been long stretches of my life that I couldn't listen to that song at all.

aSGtE is one of my favorite albums. Use of funk elements and string arrangement is so good.

In case you weren't away, ol' Sturgill's band, Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds, has an album coming out next month. Allegedly a physical release only.

Not sure it completely fits here (although I think it does) but what about Willie's "Redheaded Stranger" album? Deep to me, I guess.

Possibly my all time favorite album. I love to listen from beginning to end while driving. When Just As I Am starts playing, man it just hits. And the at the end with Hands on the Wheel and you know that he's found happiness and lasting peace again. Just a beautiful story.

Hands On the Wheel and Remember Me have become my two favorites from that album.
You're from down South,
And when you open your mouth,
You always seem to put your foot there.

I don't think I could pick a favorite. Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain was played at a dear friend's funeral who died of an OD. It was a riverside service in Kerrville. I sat next to her father and when I heard him singing along softly and crying. I joined him in singing to try to give him a little strength. Didn't take long before we were all singing.

Jason Isbell has numerous deep songs.

Vampires is one that comes to mind. Elephant is another.

100%

Seeing his solo show and the 400 unit at Radio City this weekend. His songs definitely go a bit deeper than most country.

Sorry For The Wait is one of the best songs that very few people have heard.

Also, BJ Barham has a few as well.

While not exactly deep, this song resonates with me:

George Strait Troubadour

Especially this

"Well, the truth about a mirror
It's that a damn old mirror
Don't really tell the whole truth
It don't show what's deep inside
Or read between the lines
It's really no reflection of my youth"

Snake Farm by RWH. Can you imagine a connection so deep that a hero diguised as a suitor would risk life and limb wading amongst vile reptiles to get to the love of his life Ramona in the trailer out back for $100 dollars worth of passion?

One of my best friends from high school died from cancer in his early 30's.

This song hits hard because it makes me think about him. You can hear the deep love that Toby Keith has for his friend, Wayman Tisdale.

When you lose a buddy like that. Just hearing a voicemail will bring back a flood of memories.

Quote:

I'm not crying because I feel so sorry for you
I'm crying for me.

Man...what a lyric.

Written my Lori McKenna. She's an awesome songwriter. We saw her in concert at a John Prine music festival years ago. We chucked at a story she told about someone asking her if she was depressed because of how sad her songs were. Many of them would make you think that she's ready to end it all!
