Yeah, strat was SOL after launch. I would have loved to see the courtroom scene where she told the judge to go pound sand and her walk off with her military escorts.

Should have been a post-credits scene of the Eridans sending a message to Earth about returning Ryan Gosling and the US building up its military, assuming it's a trick and they're launching an invasion.

There was one statement in the movie where Ava said she had been in East Germany. As you see her rigidity and ruthlessness come to fruition, the East Germany comment made sense in the story. It was almost Vince Gilligan how that one subte comment early made sense later in the movie.

I would like there to have been a short scene at the end where human school kids were being taught a lesson on the mission and what Grace and Rocky accomplished. It is hard to complain about the film because it was so good but could have used one bit of closure in the end where we hear how the mission was a success and see the awe in the kids faces on how all of a humanity was saved

Movie ended pretty much exactly like the book did. I thought they did a fantastic job of adapting the book to the big screen. Loved the book! Loved the movie!

Best movie in 2 years

I'd take this over anything last year

Great movie, super entertaining. Probably would have been even better if I was not a prior book reader and knew all the stuff going into it. Nonetheless, it was fun to see put to screen!

Love the Close Encounters reference, I wonder how many people got that? It didn't get a reaction in my theater.

The reference to Alien was much more obvious.

I got it. My kids didn't. Not sure anyone else in the theater did either.

Thought it was an "almost" great movie, I did really enjoy it. A little too cutesy for me to be 10/10.

A few questions:

The astro****e... how did they get off the "Adrian" planet to begin with the bacteria kept them in check?

Was the plan to dump the Adrian bacteria into the atmophere of Venus where they were reproducing? (I think that was the plan just clarifying)

The Eridian technology seemed rather primitive in general at times, did the book go into any explanation on their tech?

The Eridians are amazing engineers but have no understanding of some of the more conceptual aspects of science, such as relativity or radiation and its effects.

Someone who's read the book more recently than me could offer more details.

If I remember, they also have no concept of light, so do not know about light rays, including radiation waves.

When Grace first tried to communicate with Rocky he taps the tone from Close Encounters and thinks Rocky is responding to it but he is actually pointing at something

Yes the plan was to make the Taumoeba nitrogen resistant (accomplished in a series of generational cycles- much longer in book) so it could survive on Venus. Turns out it's a very adaptable species thus finding a way to escape the containers. (Also a lengthy process in the book to rid the fuel tanks of contamination)

Eridians, iirc, were math geniuses but had never traveled into space before. Their geometry was based on their base root of math (can't recall the specifics) but that's why the ship was shaped like it was.

Saw it last night and Felt they did as good as they could and not make it an epically long film. I didn't like the style initially as I felt the richness of the video was lacking (could be because our local theatre is subpar) and the present to past transitions were too fast. After letting go of the book's detail and accepting the film for their telling, it was fine. Like others, I hope they have an extended version.

My wife, an avid reader but not this book, loved it. I really liked it but felt I was mentally filling the gaps which may have been influenced by reading all these reviews beforehand. Ultimately, they firmly captured the spirit of the book and avoided any tendencies to interject Hollywood into the story. Not one cuss word, good humor (felt the book had tons more), science (watered-down vs book), and an uplifting ending.

Side note, my wife loved it so much that she wouldn't leave because she was convinced there'd be an after credits scene. I told her the last scene was exactly how the book ended but she refused to leave.

At least you both got to hear more of Daniel Pemberton's excellent PHM score!

The kids asked to see the movie again on IMAX so went to the Palladium today. I agree with others that there is no real difference between standard and IMAX in this movie so not worth the extra cost

I remember reading this book and thinking it was a shame that something so great could probably never be done correctly on the big screen. Boy, was I wrong.

The highest praise I can give this movie is my wife and I saw it Thursday and she loved it so much she wanted to watch The Martian today (and also loved it)

We saw it Saturday and loved it. Gosling is phenomenal. His performance is Oscar worthy. (I still love him in "The Nice Guys" more...)

Sandra Huller was also great. I really enjoyed her character. She had to make some HARD decisions. The karaoke scene was so poignant.

I read an article that the karaoke scene was not in the script. Gosling hear Huller singing from down the hall on a break and was amazed she had such a good voice. He asked her to do a singing scene in the movie. They took the idea to the directors, they got the rights to the song, and shot the scene the next day.

In the book, the Eridian's math was Base 6.

The part of the book where Grace figures it out is still fascinating.....how they tell time etc.

I wanted to ask this question, but figured it would elicit a "Go read the book..." response. Thanks for providing.

I have a ton more questions like that (ie how does Rocky respire in that enclosed ball? Or Does Rocky's existence in a largely ammonia atmosphere prove Grace's hypothesis about the need for water for life?), but I guess I really should go read the book.

Eridians don't breathe, at least not for the same reason that we do. For them it's to allow for cooling if needed. As long as his temperature was within a certain range, he can stay in the ball indefinitely.

The book is fantastic...as far the atmosphere on Erid - Grace figures out that the atmospheric pressure is 29 atmospheres (not sure I stated that right), dark....no light gets to the surface, that is why Rocky doesn't have eyes and sees via Eridian sonar. The oceans on Erid are 100 degrees celsius or hotter.

Rocky's journey to Tau Ceti is a fascinating part of the book. Eridians had not figured out relativistic physics and time dilation.

The science parts of the book were a fun read.

I guess I should read the book because that doesn't jive with my understanding of the laws of thermodynamics, and I don't want to get this thread onto a tangent.

He goes into a lot more detail on how they extract nutrients from their food, how they regulate temperature, the fact that most of their composition is actually mineral based and the biological aspect to them is fairly minimal. And how they eat is a lot more gross than the movie.

In the book, it made more sense. The two crews were always supposed to be separate, in case of emergency. Just like the President and Vice President never fly together. The two scientists were having an affair. One of them was sneaking off to lab to visit the other when it exploded.

Another part of book that was skipped over altogether was the genetic mutation. Only 1 in 10,000 people could survive the induced coma for space travel. That was main selection process for astronauts. Grace had the mutation which is why he was kept on project.
