Love it. Still holds up. Been a favorite of mine for 30+ years.

Watched it again this week and something crossed my mind I had never considered before. The bad guys had a headpiece to the staff that only had writing on one side. There is no explicit mention of where they got it, but for the first time I have a hunch.

Clue: "Hail Hitler."

Thoughts?

Yes. It's the burn scar on Toht's right hand from the fight in the bar in Nepal. You just picked this up now?

Got it.

Raiders is in my top 3 of all time. Been obsessed with it since I was a kid.

Coincidentally, my wife is making me this on her 3D printer at work this week.

No joke, when I was a kid I never wanted to be a star athlete or astronaut or anything else....I wanted to be Indiana Jones.

Lol... i don't understand how you missed that for so long. It's a key plot point for the entire story.

It's also the debunking of the stupid critique that people heard on the Big Bang Theory and parrot as though they are so smart and came up with it all by themselves. That is, the claim that Indiana has no bearing on the story. Had he never been involved, everything would have turned out the exact same way.

The Nazi's needed the medallion of make the staff and didn't know where Marion was. Indy led them to her but the gestapo guy only had the one side burned into his hand, which why we get an entire scene with the translator where they realize the Nazis are "digging in the wrong place."

And Raiders of the Lost Ark is the superior film, in the franchise. The lighting and cinematography are at its peak in this movie.

My favorite movie of all time. Saw it with my family in an old theater in La Grange that had wooden seats. Is it fair to say this movie restored the action adventure genre, or am I giving it too much credit?

In my opinion, probably the greatest movie of all time.

Not sure how you missed this OP.

Not all all.

ROTLA is only my second favorite movie of all time. I like The Empire Strikes Back a bit more. And nipping ROTLA's heels is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

It's absolutely worth the nomination for GOAT.

It's literally a "perfect" movie.

The scene that begins with Indy fighting the Nazis outside the plane they were supposed to load the Ark on and ends with him stashing the Ark outside of Cairo, may be the best full action scene in movie history.

Spielberg's masterpiece so early in his career.

Last Crusade is better but they also used a cheat code. They had the two most iconic actors of their generations. And both delivered. That puts it over the top for me.

Imagine being on set with the two male leads that delivered the three most recognizable characters in 40 years (at the time). Bond, Indy and Han Solo.

My top two as well. As a kid I wanted to be Indy most days...Han the rest.

As far as plot, I've always known they had a medallion that led them to the wrong spot. And that it only had writing on one side. All of that is explicit. Where it came from...totally inferred. And obvious in hind sight. So obvious.

Anyhow, great to spin up a thread about an all time great movie. Casting. Scenery. Music. Story line. They crushed it.

And to think that we got all of this because Lucas talked Spielberg out of directing a 007 flick.

Spielberg's masterpiece so early in his career.
A scene that gets slept on which I love: The conversation with the two government agents in the university auditorium. It has every right to be the most forgettable scene in the movie. But it is so well done that it draws you in. Sets the stage for the rest of the film while showcasing Indy's intelligence. A masterclass in exposition.

Raiders never did anything for me, but for whatever reason, this was just one of those movies that I just never watched as a kid. Temple of Doom was always on tv, so that was the Indy movie I grew up with. The Last Crusade came out when I was 10 and I loved it, but I never got around to see ROTLA until I was in my late 20s, and by then, the movie felt a bit dated.

I don't disagree with this. To me Last Crusade is my favorite. The booby traps leading to the Holy Grail plus the clues from his dad's diary all to race to save his dad and beat the Nazis. That was epic, I'd never seen anything like that before.

What elevated TLC for me was not the action - opening sequence, boat chase, motorcycle chase, tank vs horses and camels - but the father-son dynamic and the arc that both went through during the course of the movie. The addition of Henry Jones Sr literally elevated this sequel well above the Temple of Doom and to basically a more poignant version of ROTLA.

Don't get me wrong, I like The Last Crusade. But my issue with it is parallels my issues with ROTJ in the OT.

Star Wars and Empire were both a bit dark and edgy for PG movies at the times. Small amounts of comic relief but pushed the boundaries, again for the time, between a PG and an R. The same is true for Raiders and Temple of Doom.

ROTJ toned down the dark for the most part and added the cutesy element of the Ewoks. Last Crusade relied more on comedy than the first two Indiana films and was just more folksy, less serious, and added the element of men in their 70's doing men in their 70's things. The violence became more slapstick and less blood splatter.

I love both OT's dearly but there is a difference in film #3 of both franchises. As a kid I was drawn to the darker, edgier films. Hard for younger people to get I think but things were different then.

One other thing. Last year I spent 18 days in Europe with my dad on a father/son bucket list trip. UK - Germany - CZ - Austria - Slovakia - Hungary - Switzerland - Italy - Lichtenstein and back to London and Austin. We were about the same age as Indy and Henry were in Last Crusade.

I leave the main living room tv in our house on all the time whether being watched or not, mostly to keep up with news. A couple weeks after we got back, Last Crusade was on and I stopped and watched about 30 minutes of it. After just spending 18 days in Europe, with my 80 year old dad, in some of the same countries, Indy telling Henry "come on Dad" had a whole new and circle of life meaning for me.

Oddly enough, I was "Team Raiders" and never saw the original Star Wars movies in the theater. Just another dumb 12 yo who looked at the type of kids that were excited about the movie back then and concluded, "Star Wars is for NERDS!"

I agree that TLC "cheated" by adding Sean Connery. That casting decision was a no brainer to guarantee box office gold, and it's understandable why some would rate that movie higher, of course. However, ROTLA gets bonus points for:
1) Introducing me to Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones. I think the opening scene is better than any Bond movie and second only to Saving Private Ryan's beach landing.
2) Like 007, Indy always got the job done, but I liked him more because:
a. Like Superman, he had an alter ego - the nerdy professor almost oblivious to the female students with a crush on him.
b. He was a reluctant, flawed hero who ended up in hilarious situations.
