I think we're all aware of the first Grammy for Hard Rock/Heavy Metal going to Jethro Tull over Metallica.
I just read that the 1976 Grammy for Best New Artist went to Starland Vocal Band over Boston.
I was too young to appreciate any controversy over the latter but I vividly remember the uproar over Tull winning instead of Metallica.
What other such examples like this can you think of that in hindsight seem absolutely comical?
Let's keep this musical. Don't need a rehashing of "Forrest Gump over Shawshank" or the travesty that was "Crash" winning best picture.
