One of my favorite things when I saw Gladiator at the theater was two different people I overheard that actually thought Maximus was a real person.

onearmy, i was trying to say that sometimes youre in the mood for art house, and sometimes mindless comedy/violence is good, but i wouldn't only want to watch one kind or the other.

and that of the mindless violence type, gladiator is pretty damn good.

I only saw the first 20 minutes, but it was easily the best movie ever made.

Gladiator was won of the best.

Some of the worst... Crash, Brokeback, and Capote.

Gladiator was a fantastic movie. There have been no real favorites of mine in the last few years as far as I remember. It seems as though there is a trend for hollywood to make movies with political motives lately...and they just flat out suck. Hollywood needs to stick with entertaining.
Of course, that's a whole new can of issues left to be open.

Schindler's List is without a doubt the best movie made within the last 15 years. Not that I don't like Forrest Gump, but c'mon.

Interesting bump . I hadn't seen this movie since before this post existed, but my 9 yo has been interested in history lately and we just watched this over the weekend.

Good movie, dialog and story is kinda janky for a movie that won best picture. Phoenix is so good as creepy emperor guy.

Dang, 9 feels young for Gladiator.

The movie was already 6 years old at the time of the original post, which is a bit odd.

The movie is now almost a quarter century old - life comes at you fast, man.

Let me illustrate that point

My Gladiator story is I refused to watch it when it came out.

I was 12 when it released in theaters, and "historical" movies were the farthest thing from my interests at the time. My family would go to the movies every Sunday, and I just wasn't interested in this movie, so I went to another movie while my parents and brother watched Gladiator.

Couldn't even tell you what movie I watched, I just remember going into their theater once my movie ended and watching the last 40 minutes or so.

I don't remember it having any particular effect, but I can tell you that by the time LOTR came out the following year, I was into that kind of movie. Can't remember exactly when I watched it, but it's been a favorite of mine ever since I did. And also an all-time score by Zimmer.

I always regret that I didn't see it in theaters.

Kid goes to a public school in Texas, actors with swords aren't that scary. The only thing that bugged him were the historical inaccuracies.

Never understood the over the top hype for this movie. It's good, but not worthy of best picture by any stretch.

Definitely one of the top 5 movie scenes hands down

Nothing like the graphic raping of a family to start little agdoc down a dark path of violent extremism.

Gladiator hasn't aged well for me. I remember loving it.... but it hasn't had the staying power of Braveheart or even "Master & Commander". Those two I will always watch at least 15-20 minutes worth any time they are on.

Gladiator seems to drag about 1/2way through the show & Ridley Scott's insistence on using a weird blue filter for much of the movie annoys me on repeat viewings. (He does this in a lot of them)

That opening scene.... freaking nails though.

I'll agree on Master & Commander, but Braveheart has aged poorly for me. It always dragged a little, but aside from a few of the battle scenes, it's just hard to sit through it anymore. Maybe part of it is just knowing what we know now about Gibson. I can still sit and watch Gladiator any time.

Don't remember that in the movie I saw, killing of the family happens off screen. Violence in this movie is just what you see in Star Wars/Marvel but with blood. I read the common sense media review to my wife and got permission before viewing.

First R-rated film I ever saw in theaters. I was 13 and the whole thing blew my mind. Still one of my Top 10.

Also, if I remember correctly, 2000 was a historical year for theaters. A series of enormous blockbusters came out that year including Gladiator, U-571, Meet the Parents, Gone in 60 Seconds, MI:2, X-Men, and The Patriot. It might've been the best year ever at the time.

Anytime I see Crowe now (most recently in the newest Thor movie) I simply can't process that he looks the way he does now. I know it's been 20 years but for whatever reason I simply can't get past the fact that he's old and fat.

I see him like this now and my mind just tells me it's Crowe's brother or some other dude that kind of looks like him.

I must have missed the extended cut version. Remember the family being killed off screen. Crowe cries at their feet, but you only their feet.
