Same thing happened in '07, back when Burn was scheduled for a Saturday. Long story short it probably would have been impossible to burn that night because of the tsunami that rolled through CS to end the burn ban, so we burned on Tuesday.

Would it help/hurt the situation if 'concerned citizens' called in to the judge's office asking for leniency on a permit?

I would think they could take some proper cautions to ensure bonfire took place as schedule. There's literally no grass within perimeter to catch fire and if they soak the ground well and have a fire crew on hand (as planned) I would think they could easily control it.

I recall from the bonfires I worked 04-08 that there were years of burn bans that we had to think about shifting burn dates.

If there is a burn ban in place I dont see how calling in would make them change there mind.

Perhaps we can get someone info from the county on how much rain would be needed to lift the ban and how far in advance to burn this rain would need to occur.

The problem is not only around perimeter. If its dry enough embers can fly pretty far to start a fire in another location.

Especially in 2005 when we paid a fine for (attempted) violation of the burn ban.

I'm pretty sure we'd pay the fine for the violation and get on with it. I don't know what the consequences are for repeat offenses though.

I'm sure there's enough of us who would chip in to help offset the fine that it isn't a financial issue, but I imagine SB would like to stay in the good graces of Robertson County.

It sucks for those that have family coming in and already have hotel rooms.

Then we pick up stack and move it into Brazos county where there's no burn ban.

If the wind is dead that day, it may change their opinions....maybe??? I'd like to see them bring in a couple of those watering trucks and just wet the hell outta burn site.

Looking at the weather it seems there is rain in the forecast tomorrow but not today. Do you know what time the emergency meeting it and about what time the public will know. Tomorrow is the only burn night my family would be able to attend but driving in from Austin we obviously need advance notice. Thanks again for looking out for the out of towners

anyone know why there isn't the slightest bit of info about this on the website?

If I had two guesses, they would be

a. Lighting it is the least important part of Burn Night (strange as that may sound)
b. There is one more meeting today to review the status of the burn ban, so turning Aggies off to the whole deal at this point might be un-called-for.

I personally feel like the Aggies that truly believe we only light it to make room for next year wouldn't bother themselves with burn bans and the like. But those Aggies that think that Bonfire and the 3 months of blood, sweat and tears that it entails are all about a warm fire on a cold November evening, well they'll go off the deep-end as far as giving up on things if they catch wind that stuff might not be going their way. I don't think anyone can say that things won't go their way yet, so why run 'em off?

Keeping the potential spectators updated is not running them off...

What will run them off and turn some against, are the rumors flying around without an official update.

From what I've gathered, some people are saying that it is burning for sure, some people have already given up, and the informed folks are saying that it is unsure what tomorrow will bring. Unfortunately, that third response is the least popular with people trying to make time and travel out there, so they're more prone to listening to the other two.

That will end up with two large groups:
The group that comes out because they believe it will burn no matter what, and the group that is upset the next day because they were told it wasn't burning at all.

If the burn ban isn't lifted will burn be a rescheduled event?
...will driving in from Houston/Dallas/Anchorage be a waste of time? What will happen instead?
...When will the county make it known what will happen?

These are key pieces of information that will not turn anyone away that is wanting to come. In fact, it would help things run smoothly.

At the very least some kind of FAQ section that says:
Q: I've heard Robertson County has a burn ban in effect. Will that affect the burning of Bonfire?
A: ...

relative humidity should be above 80% all day long, low winds, a high dew point, and still a slight chance for a showers... gotta pray that the county will be kind

the fire isn't the important part but I don't think anyone will understate the significance of the event for both the cathartic experience of those who built it and the revenue that it brings in.

I guess I personally couldn't conceive anyone believing that there wouldn't be something to do and a damned good reason to come out to Bonfire. But everyone else isn't me, so...

Anyway, I have a hunch an update is on the way.

I'm sure people will come in full force and that the night will still be fun for all, as it is any time Aggies gather. It's just weird to consider a night without that big thing that can cook smores from 30 yrds away.

Regardless of how it works out it's still been my favorite season to date.

If the burn ban is still on tonight, what if we all brought lighters and held them up at a certain time?

Bonfire is about the burning desire inside each and every Aggie to beat the hell outta t.u., so this might be a great way to keep that fire alive in each of us, even though the big fire might be delayed for a day or two.
