In 2024, Bonfire continues as it began in 1907 and always has been - built and led by students.

A long review last night of Cut III, the first double and the first work on Perimeter for the season. And a couple surprises...

My wife (also '96) and I are coming to Bonfire this year. I don't see a post here that details the date and time. When will we burn the hell this November?

Burn will be November 29, the night before the home game. Visit BONFIRE.ag for more Burn Night details. In an effort to drive attendance in a way that doesn't result in a two-lane parking lot on Highway 6 from OSR to University Dr. (I still have hives thinking about 2009), attendance to Burn is charged PER VEHICLE (so carpool), and is cheaper the earlier you arrive. Park before 4pm, and you can bring a van load of Aggies for free.

It is important to point out, especially this year, that Bonfire is entirely student led and executed. Their first and highest priority is and always should be the safe, complete, and faithful execution of the Bonfire itself in the way it should be built - by hand. It is a year-round endeavor, planning, preparing, and raising money for the opportunity to do the work, with only the final three months being Cut and Stack. All of which to say, they do the absolute best they can to improve the Burn Night experience. But Burn is - currently - on privately owned working land leased by Bonfire. There is only so much that they can do to improve the land. Until we as Former Students can square away what these students can't be expected to and purchase and improve a permanent site the only purpose of which is hosting Bonfire, we all need to be prepared to show up early, carpool, prepare to maybe get muddy, and work with these Aggies. Their effort these last 20 years has got us farther than I think anybody could have imagined. But there is absolutely work left to do outside of building Bonfire itself.

All of which to say, I am preparing for an event this year that will test these Aggies and all of us as Aggies everywhere. Please support them in any way you can. Former Students with industry experience in construction and land work are engaged in working with Bonfire preparing site for this year. Volunteers are engaged in coordinating and supporting various aspects of Burn Night (light plants, parking, trash and toilet services, law enforcement, traffic control, etc.). There is room for more support on all fronts.

One of the most important ways you can support these Aggies on Burn Night this year is to give them a little grace for Burn, and encourage the same from others. These Aggies - as every generation of Aggies before - have done and will do more than anybody could possibly expect or even imagine. There will be some bumps, maybe even some big ones. That won't compromise their pride and motivation, and appetite to grow and improve and learn. I hope they'll inspire us to do the same, as we each did in our times.

Since we are under a burn ban, how will that work? Need some rain badly.

Good question. We have been under a burn ban at some point in the season many times - probably most seasons and maybe even every season. As long as the Burn Ban clears a week before Burn, Bonfire will go off as scheduled.

The week deadline is there due to the substantial financial and logistical demands of staging a Burn event, with the bulk of the costs being due - most of them non-refundable - in advance of Burn. Bonfire is still not in a financial position to incur those expenses if staging the Burn event is not guaranteed. If there is a burn ban and it is lifted less than a week before Burn, that would not be enough time to secure all the required elements (insurance, light plants, porta potties, trash collection, etc.)

With all that in mind, if the burn ban persists through past a week before the scheduled Burn date, then Burn would be rescheduled for the Spring. In the past, consideration was given once to a Burn before the bowl game, but too many Aggies - especially students - would be out of town. So the soonest Bonfire will burn after a delay is the Spring semester. There have been tremendous crowds for these Spring-semester Burns.

One final note: Bonfire is on a private working pasture. Until such time as Bonfire has a home dedicated entirely to hosting Bonfire, there is a limit to what can be done to the site. Bonfire can't grade and put a parking lot over what someone is ranching. Which means that there is absolutely such a thing as "too much rain". Check bonfire.agfor updates on all that closer to Burn.

Thank you for the response. Praying for some rain to get the burn ban lifted.

looks like we're about to get 7-8 days of rain in a row around here. Hopefully that will get the burn ban lifted.
