Where should I start? Ok, as many of you probably know, or maybe you don't, my username used to be infamous a few years back when I was sorely uninformed about most things, and mainly just speaking out of my a**. I did the most reprehensible thing that I am still apologetic to this day, and that was to use the memory of Levi to boost my arguments on the side of BCS. I helped to start BCS in the spring of 2003 with one of my friends, because we thought it would be a great outlet and channel to get Bonfire back on campus, the "right way", and to have it be "on campus" as well as without any of the so called "horesplay" that dominated so much of the Bonfire culture in the 1990's and what Northside residents (including me, have come to know and love). Initially we did not want to do an off campus bonfire because we did not want to do one unless it was the "real" one, meaning that it was on campus, with the football team there, yell leaders, president of school, thousands of people, etc. etc. sorta what the old one was. If we didnt have all the characteristics, we didnt want it. We still had all the love passion for Bonfire, but it was different, as in, we first wanted to educate about it, and primarily focus on the negative things that partly led to the collapse, in order to help educate on what not to do. We had, and did, go to dorms and have (here comes the name again that is infamous on this thread) Craig Rotter come and show videos to students, and not just play to the heart strings of the students, but, hopefully generate a little knowledge and budding passion to get Bonfire back. While, we couldnt do an actual Bonfire, the only thing we could do is just educate, and educate, and sell t-shirts, and sell merchandise, and just promote Bonfire to visitors, former students, etc. Also trying in vain to get the administration to do some sort of action, but with litigation going on until God knows, its a little helpless. BCS did help in lifting the moratorium from the selling of Bonfire related merchandise, so, that was an accomplishment. But yeah, BCS's efforts, while with good intent, are sort of in vain right now because of the litigation, and the administration not being able to do anything as of yet. So, what they can do is just educate, and sell merchandise.
The so called animosity is, I guess, in the fact that both want Bonfire back, but, in different ways. BCS was built upon the knowledge of what went wrong throughout the 90's and with 99, and we originally, and i guess its still prevalent, that BCS does not want Bonfire back on campus with "horesplay", and with many people in BCS believing that if anyone goes out to SB, thats all that will occur, and it will be a danger to the sustaining of Bonfire. They see the "horesplay" as a negative, but, really havent experienced "horesplay" to know what it is, they just know it as a definition. BCS has an idea of what Bonfire should be when (if) it comes back, and seeing SB do their thing, in a way makes them cautious to hope that nothing happens to help destroy Bonfire for the future. And so that is why there is a force, sort of like to opposite ends of a magnet, that both groups have, and if they can just work together, it might just do some good. But again, nothing can be determined without litigation being done with, then the administration reviewing facts and making a decision. So, until that day comes, BCS's purpose is at a stalemate, while SB can only do what it can to help carry on the knowledge and camraderie of Bonfire in the only way it knows how, and that is build one.
Oh, yeah, and that mini-b that is out there, we felt that we wanted to let visitors know, when they came by the table what we were all about, by making a model of a "true" Bonfire. A few of us went out to east texas, and spent the night shootin the breeze, drinking and stuff, and the next morning, we used a chainsaw for the smaller stuff, and an axe for a larger log that we brought back to CS, and that is still around somewhere. We did the little stuff, as in, nobody who didnt help chop and build the model could not touch it, and we out the fish in charge of guarding it. and its been thrown around that if, BCS cant do a real Bonfire, just go to some land and help clear brush and stuff, and learn how to use an axe by chopping small trees down. But see, also, BCS was partly built around the idea of having comraderie through the organization, sort of like a fraternity, and that is also why the organization has stuck around, becuase the people are sort of like a fraternity. So yeah.
As for me, I left the organization that I helped to build, after one semester, because i did not like the way it was heading, and plus i was "talked out of not going" to 2003's Student Bonfire, because I needed to keep my focus on what was "really important", oh and I was a crew chief, and felt that I didnt deserve that distinction without earning it. And, so, as NorthsideGreek06 can attest, I left to put all my effort into Building the Best Bonfire I could in the off campus one, because i personally felt that, if i was soon to graduate, i really wanted to participate in this. And, I can tell anyone who is on the limb, and not knowing what to do, it is better to experience some hard work, blood, sweat, tears, blisters, sore body, etc. into something that is fun, and the bond that you make with your fellow man, is going to be stronger that ever. But you cannot go into building Bonfire with a predetermined negative mindset, because you are only going to let yourself down. Bonfire will do its part, if you do yours. While SB is not perfect, with each burn, corrections are made, to help ensure its safety and fun. Because what is the true meaning of Bonfire, its the Spirit that each Aggie has to Beat the everlivin crud out of tu, and to prove to the rest of the world that us Aggies can still build one hell of a fire.
So, if you want to talk about how Bonfire "was" great, and how it used to be, and talk about how you imagine it to be in the future when the administration brings it back, if it brings it back, by all means, no one is stopping you to join BCS. But, if you want to build something tangible, where you feel it not only physically in your body, but also spiritully, build a Bonfire.
