I'm just reading this thread for the first time today. J.P. Beato, the student who took the photograph was indeed nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage. A week or two ago the Pulitzers were announced and a photo from the Colombine took the prize. It's an honor that an A&M student was even nominated (probably a first in A&M history) and that as a result a few more people were able to see Tim Kerlee's bravery.

I talked to J.P. for the documentary I made on the coverage of the accident. This may be common knowledge but he went to the hospital on Friday to see Tim Kerlee after the photo had been published throughout the state. Journalists are usually told to stay objective and detached, but J.P. felt like he needed to do something, and going to the hospital was the only thing he could do at that point. J.P. didn't get to see Tim that day, but was still at the hospital when he was taken off life support. Tim touched so many people in so many ways and this is just one more small example of that.

Though painful, I never tire of seeing this picture because it reminds me that angels were watching over Tim even at this terrible moment. We know they escorted him into the presence of God and there are more among us. Many Aggies have died tragically this year; it is my belief that each one had a guardian angel waiting to escort them home.
