Had a great Bible study this morning and it was immediately followed by worship. The hymn that came to mind and I sang was Holy, Holy, Holy, It is one I've heard my whole life but what amazed me this morning is how amazing of a worship song it is. There are a ton of hymns out there that are truly worship songs and are so deep. Thought I'd share a few that have really touched me the past few weeks. Would love to know other's favorites and songs that speak to you Spiritually.

You do not have a soul. You are a soul that has a body.

We sing Hallelujah! The Lamb has overcome!

I hate modern worship music so much. I'm only 37, but I love the old school hymns so much more than modern worship music, which just sounds like repetitive pop, to me.

Our church has been going through a Psalter recently and have absolutely loved it. Each month we pick a new hymn from it and sing it once a week. Last month we did Psalm 98 and it has become our family's favorite. Even our 9 year old loves it.

This one always brings me to tears. Such a powerful presentation of the Gospel.

In Christ Alone is one of my all time favorites. I remember how much it impacted me when my wife was pregnant, considering the lyrics....
"From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny..."

I always like to share this one also. This is what our church sings prior to communion on Sunday.

Last one I will plug, from Martin Luther. Always been curious what our catholic friends think of this one

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.

I am on the worship team of a fairly large Baptistish church. I usually play bass, and sometimes 12 string; I love the contemporary worship songs, but nothing compares to the lyrical and melodic content of our traditional hymns. Something that has stood the test of a few hundred years usually has some depth and has moved congregations for a while.

I wish we did more traditional hymns.

My favorite album right now is by The Gray Havens, Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery. Do yourself a favor and add it to your Spotify playlist.

Hoping to get more good recommendations from others here as well.

I always loved "Victory in Jesus" and "To God be the Glory" from the old Baptist Hymnal.

"Victory in Jesus"

I heard an old, old story
How a Savior came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me
I heard about His groaning
Of His precious blood's atoning
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory

Oh, victory in Jesus, my Savior forever
He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood
He loved me 'ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood

I heard about His healing
Of His cleansing power revealing
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus, come and heal my broken spirit"
And somehow Jesus came and brought to me the victory

Oh, victory in Jesus, my Savior forever
He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood
He loved me 'ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood

I heard about a mansion he has built for me in glory,
And I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing and the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory

Oh, victory in Jesus, my Savior forever
He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood
He loved me 'ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood

"To God be the Glory"

To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life our redemption for sin,
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice;
Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.

Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice;
Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice;
Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.

The hymns are pretty repetitive. Most have 4-5 verses with the same tune.

To God be the Glory was my dad's favorite. We played it at his funeral. Love that song.

This is a more recent composition (1980s) and is a beautiful piece regarding the end of life and the transition to eternity.

My favorite Tenebrae responsory... Aestimatus Sum. TTBB arrangement. I love TTBB arrangements... rich sonic texture.

Aestimatus sum cum descendentibus in lacum:
Factus sum sicut homo sine adiutorio, inter mortuos liber.
Posuerunt me in lacu inferiori, in tenebrosis,
et in umbra mortis.

I am counted among those that go down to the depths:
I am as a man without help, free among the dead.
They have laid me in the lower pit, in darkness,
and in the shadow of death.

I very much agree with you. BUT I love " I Can Only Imagine". I've left instructions that it be sung at my funeral. Whenever that is!

Very good song. I still find it strange to hear it sung as part of a praise and worship service on Sunday morning. But maybe I am just becoming an old...

Well, I am old. I, too, find it strange in a traditional service. This was THE song on my pilgrim Walk to Emmaus so it has lots of great memories for me. Plus it's a great song.

The 2 songs for my funeral are "I Can Only Imagine" and "How Great Thou Art". Two songs from different genres and different generations but the same theme.

And yes, I'm a planner!

This is easily my favorite. Kings kaleidoscope Come Thou Fount.

While I don't agree with everything this band does (F word in what is essentially another worship song - not this one), their Asaphs Arrows CD is awesome and worth a listen.
