SpaceX just took a $20b refinancing deal at investment-grade levels (SOFR+100). Got them out of other debt that was as high as 12.5%, saving approx $1b in debt servicing annually.

Post-IPO they'll have $80b cash on hand. Mars is still the philosophical goal but Starship is going to be a workhorse in short order for the orbiting datacenter plan. Falcon built it, Starlink sustains it at the moment, and Starcompute will take it to the next level.

Not to mention Starship being a heavy lift RETRUN vehicle as well, lunar mining and or lunar manufacturing... Who knows if that market will develop, but the possibility for nice materials is certainly there.

Just a guess, but don't think they're getting to consistent launches of compute to space until the end of the decade.

Why don't they ever show the full explosion of ship?

I don't disagree but with the Anthropic deal they just did they market data on how much revenue is out there for compute. Starlink v3 will be amazing but they'll hit a revenue wall there at some point just from market saturation. Probably enough of a bridge to get them to the compute constellation, where revenue will continue to scale along with demand I reckon.

How much more did you need? I thought they showed pretty much the whole thing on the live stream.

Ah! Wonderful. I figured they would keep the buoy cam on.

That's what I was basing that on. I missed the actual launch and then caught up during dinner. After a couple a looks from the wife, I turned it off.

Some men just like to watch the starship burn

Mishap investigation for Booster 19 will apparently be a thing. Why so long to decide this?

Have to investigate the mishap to determine if you need to investigate the mishap.

Hi Bob!

The incident happened after 5pm on the friday before memorial day weekend and they made the decision within a day after memorial day. Not sure what you were expecting from a government agency.

I expected no mishap investigation. They knew on Friday that the booster came down in the Gulf, within the hazard area, as expected*, and no one or their property was harmed.

*It was going mach @#$& instead of hovering, but it was in the right place and under its own aerodynamic control.

Yeah, in earlier missions, a high speed impact in the designated impact area in the ocean would have been fine.

Hell, for any other rocket company, a high speed impact in a designated impact area IS fine.

Anytime you have a rocket travelling in an unplanned direction during flight and landing in the water uncontrolled, even if it is within the area you said debris might land, the FAA is going to want to know what happened. Spacex probably already knows what went wrong and will have a fix ready within a week or so to put in the report. I don't see this holding up progress for the next flight.

I don't either. They'll have this one clear in record time. It just seems performative.

super early to speculate, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see the next launch in August.

Late June or early/mid July are the goals I have seen mooted. Mishap investigation I am glad to see actually, as it would be good to learn of remediations/investigation to causes of the 'bad flip' etc, but I think it will proceed in short order.

I'm more concerned about pad 1 progress over the next few weeks, tbf. That needs to be ready before they try to catch a booster/upper stage, imho.

I thought they said they wouldn't try a catch again until they had two straight successful booster launches and ship to orbit insertions.

Yeah we are like 5 months at minimum out from a booster catch.

Waiting to get pad 1 ready will take too long. I thought SpaceX had a sense of urgency in getting starship operational.

They can still launch from pad 2 to keep working through their operational flights to work up to orbital flights. But trying a catch and potentially damaging pad 2 before pad 1 is ready later this year means potentially losing the ability to launch anything until they fix whatever they break. Smarter to wait for the catch attempts until pad 1 is available.

When will the tower at KSC be able to catch? Could they catch the ship over there after an orbit and just have to barge it back to Boca Chica?

That might not be logistically possible... Mainly at Boca

I think the construction is mostly done on the tower at 39A. Probably stil a couple of months from being ready to use it, but it will probably be ready before Pad 1 at Starbase. Not sure the status of the rest of the 39A facilities such as propellant tank farms and deluge water tanks.

They've already started deluge testing over there.

ETA: looking for this video and can't find it. I think it may have been a test of the Grackle that powers the deluge without any water flow. When/if I find the video I'll link it with a timestamp.

Ship 41 should be for flight 14. Ship 40 for flight 13 has already had a cryo test and should be a couple weeks from a static fire.
