I'm sure NOBODY could have predicted this. Only took a year and they are blaming a bird flu for the shortage. Of course the media is complicity trying to cover this little fact up. Lunatics did it to themselves.

Liberalism is a cancer to this country and we desperately need to eradicate it.

They were up all last year.

Now the media picks up on it? They're way late

I was told my chickens wouldn't really save me money. I was fine with that as I like the farm eggs. I spend about $20 a month on a bag of pellets and let them free range for bugs and seeds and grass shoots and get usually enough eggs that I give some away to family regularly.

The problem now is eggs are used to make a LOT of other prepared foods.

If they can clear up this bird kill virus they can have new laying birds back in action in about 6 months, but supplies will be reduced for a while. Also, chicken itself may cost a little more.

I just found out that Sprouts still has them at the "old school" prices.

Now I'm just trying to decide if it's worth going into the hippie wonderland to save a few bucks.

Higher cost means fewer eggs being cooked for breakfast. That means less natural gas being used on gas stoves.

Interesting video. It would not surprise me there are supply chain cost issues involved. Feed pellets have gone up about 25% in price in the last year.

Diseases can eventually be isolated and flocks replaced in time.

Feed costs, which is heavily transportation driven and labor driven, is a major contributing factor.

Do people really think that you can sell eggs at $1.29/dozen with $15/hour labor and $4+ diesel? Yeah. Maybe in fantasyland.

All of the chicken/egg farmers should not expand but retract to help raise prices and profits. Maybe some of the liberals in California can become chicken farmers and abide by all of the crazy liberal state regulations they have they have on ag producers.

I know, I know, it's a yahoo article, but with Iowa being the number one egg producer and hearing stories all fall of the flu destroying flocks in Central and Northern Iowa, figure I'd post it. When the earlier post says farmers can't afford the food, remember that most egg and chicken production is contract raising just like hogs. The large companies own the birds and usually the feed mills. The farmer puts the building up and is paid so much for the space and other incentives on top of that. I'm sure 100% isn't like that, but a vast majority are. Most of these sensational videos about farmers woes are just for headlines and clicks.

Cage free chickens are just crammed into a bigger cage. It's probably worse for the chicken in many scenarios

https://www.kcrg.com/2022/01/04/new-california-law-may-impact-iowa-hog-farmers/ Besides the bird flu, California does bring on its own problems and in turn screws everyone else with their bs regulations. They passed a law saying how hogs in iowa should be raised. While I feel these people have no understanding in actual animal welfare, I truly believe it's a slow trickle to banning animal agriculture in the guese of animal welfare. How the commerce clause doesn't stop this crap is beyond me.

What does the price matter? I am pretty confident folks who get free money from the government still get the same amount of eggs per week no matter the cost. They never feel the true consequence of elevated prices.

Same here. My 3 free range hens give too many eggs as it is, and the duck should start laying in the spring. Some costs beyond the feed (which isn't much since they feed themselves on the pasture), but it's minimal. Didn't think the prices would go up the way they did when I got them last year, but I'm in Idaho, so it's probably not too bad here. Should check next time I go to the store and see where it's at now.
