Warning issued. If you're downstream be prepared.

Biden will blame climate change no doubt.

Don't worry, this will make it into a green dam.

Why is there a threat, from the video, it's doing exactly as it was designed?

A meteorite could strike it, causing the dam to collapse; since there's a chance that could happen, however remote, the warning is in fact justified. Duh!!!

Would seem the possibility of failure is always there.

It almost failed during Rita and they had to do an emergency release and drop the lake level for a year to repair it. That was due to 20'+ waves crashing into it.

Nothing more than a government agency covering their asses. Yes there is a one in a million chance of a failure, so let's issue a warning and scare the **** out of everyone

The dam will not fail but the people who built in the flood plain below Lake Livingston will be reminded that there is a reason why you do not build in a flood plain.. The Trinity River Authority has covered their collective asses.

This is really vague and kind of strange coming from the actual TRA. It reads like a news media hype piece. "THE DAM MIGHT FAIL". No info one what the issue is or the plan of action.

Rita damaged the actual rip-rap on the dam itself making the dam susceptible to erosion, making lowering the lake level necessary to repair.

"The potential does exist but there is no immediate danger…"

That sounds like a conflicting statement.

A remote potential sounds like it would be an immediate danger.

Sounds like they're not really sure.

They need to add more details about this "remote potential."

Not an expert at all but my guess is they are worried about this part of the spillway, eroding further up toward the damn dam.

This. Butt covers are the only product the government is capable of manufacturing.

That seems readily fixed with a shipment of big assed rocks.

They're required to put out this kind of notice given the erosion that has occurred at the edges of the spillway.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I hate it when Trump screws with the integrity of dams. Bad Trump!

To be honest, aren't ALL dams at "risk of potential failure"?

Particularly once there is water behind the dam, lol.

2018 flooding.

Pictures of the recessed areas are the same. Also it's a boulder covered area.

I've got rural property near the Trinity River less than 20 miles from Lake Livingston. The Trinity is still very swollen and carrying a lot of water from all that rain we've had between Houston and Dallas the last few months. They're going to have to keep those spill gates wide open for a while yet to come. If we can avoid heavy rains going forward and the lake level comes down, then they can slow down the spillway and get to those eroded areas and fix them. Last thing they need now would be a hurricane or tropical storm to come in and stall over the Trinity river system.

Not an engineer, but I do work at a Dam and that's where I see something that could be an issue. Not being able to use the 2 gates in the tents may be part of the issue. We have a gate opening sequence that we have learned over the years from experience that gets the most water out while doing the least amount of damage below the dam. Being able to send more water down the middle may have helped it from curling around those wing walls.

Probably not a huge issue, just a little more work to do once the gates an all closed. As long as water isn't going over the top they should be good.
