Instead of placing tariffs on Mexico, he should levy a 30+% tax on remittances to all of central/south America. Would be MUCH more effective. Mexico would lose their minds over it, as 20+% of their GDP is US remittances.

It's a bargaining position.

Hit them where it hurts to get them to do what you want. Start with a strong position.

If you think they don't cave and 90% of the tariffs go away before being enacted ur a loon.

He did this last time as well and got alot of concessions and almost none of the tariffs except on Chinese made crap ever went into effect.

I think he can do many of the tariffs mainly with executive power.

However, levying that tax on remittances would call for Congressional action.

And we know how anxious the Dems will be to help Trump have ANY type of win.

Why not go 50%?
Mexicans don't pay tariffs on Mexican goods - US shoppers do. Mexico will never pay for the wall. That was complete BS from day one. What tariffs actually do is make imports more expensive so we buy less of them. That's useful as a negotiating tool or to protect or encourage the growth of domestic alternatives.

How does a tariff like this work? Is every item coming across the border from Canada get a 25% tax or only things manufactured in Canada? Not sure I fully understand.

There are some US companies who moved production from China to Mexico due to the 302 tariffs that will be having some challenging meetings this week.

Wonder if this will send lumber prices up again. Really it's going to send almost all prices up.

Yup having 11 to 20 million more people here scamming our systems, using schools, hospitals, committing crimes that shouldn't have been committed because they shouldn't have been there and 75000 annual deaths due to fentanyl do nothing to raise prices.

Would be hard to enforce. There are plenty of underground/blackmarket ways for people to send back money.

Honestly, we just need immigration reform and a clear work visa program like many other countries have.

It's a negotiating position. It's pretty transparent but the only thing that makes it work is the perception of Trump's erratic decision-making, so your ilk has played their part.
There seems to be a lot of faithless Trump supporters on this board.

"He won't actually do that" or "That's not what he really means" is what I hear often

I believe in Donald Trump

I believe that when he says he will do something, he will try to do it.

Have a little more faith in your president.

And also consider stockpiling food in preparation for the collapse

The products won't even make it to shelf because the market will adjust and source from non-tarriff impacted similar goods.

That's kind of the entire point of a tarriff....

You realize that cheaper products not being available is the same as a tax hike, right? This isn't the genius point y'all think it is.

I think Canada is included because they will agree quickly to the terms and it will be dropped. It is probably already planned. Then that puts public pressure on the Mexican government.

I'll give Trump this. He swings for the fences. His second term will either go down as historic or a colossal failure.

the net effect is that the consumer pays more. simple example:

heb buys avocados for a $1 from mexico and sells them for $1.50. now there's a 25% tariff so those $1 avocados now cost $1.25, so they buy avocados from peru instead for $1.10 and sell them for $1.60.

the consumer now pays 10 cents more for avocados. this is why tariffs are inflationary.

Reminder that after tariffs were announced in Q4 2018:

- Stock market dropped 15% in the final few months of the year; first negative year since 2011

- GDP growth slowed to 2% in 2019 and 1.8% in Q4 2019 YOY

- Tariffs did not seem to cause long-term inflation as customers changed their spending habits and only 12% of imported goods were tariffed

Yeah, having your large industries gutted because their products aren't affordable in the biggest consuming nation on the planet probably won't affect the tariffed country's economy much.

They'll probably just blow us off and sell to Belgium instead.

Nonsense. All I've read here is that the economy was absolutely on fire under Trump until the China virus was unleashed to steal the 2020 election from him.
