If Mitch was going to run for another term, do you think, with how he voted on the Trump confirmations, he get reelected or lose in a primary?

He hasn't officially said, but given that a lot of people are making moves to run for the seat in 2026, he is not expected to run for reelection.

That said, doesn't seem like he'd care one way or the other at this point. He's just going to be an irritant for 2 years.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

What an upside down world we live in when not a single Democrat votes to confirm a Kennedy and the former Republican Senate Majority Leader is the only one to join the clown car.

Oh, I thought he said this was his last term… maybe wishful thinking. My real question was, is he so ingrained in the system that he really wouldn't be in danger of losing in a primary, regardless of how he voted on the confirmations. Only R to cross the line for both Tulsi and RFK jr.

Quote:

Longtime vaccine critic Robert F. Kennedy is now the nation's top health official, after the Senate Thursday voted almost entirely on party lines to confirm him atop a department of nearly 100,000 employees that run 13 agencies.

The 52-48 confirmation vote brings to a close a contentious three-month confirmation fight that served as a significant test of the Republican Party's loyalty to President Trump.

Only Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) cast a GOP vote against Kennedy's confirmation, after previously bucking his party on Trump's defense secretary and national intelligence director.

Trump needs to come out publicly and rip Mitch's ass to shreds, followed by Thune removing him from any leadership/committee assignments.

True, but its even worse than that.

McConnell is not just a Republican senator. He was the leader for quite some time, and before that he headed the republican conference, and before that he was Whip!

His job for over two decades has been to literally make sure all Republicans vote like Republicans! Quite a turn for the turtle.

I'm no fan of McConnell (or any politician that should be enjoying retirement), but a guy that had polio likely isn't going to be a big fan of a guy that is against the vaccine to prevent the disease.

People need to stop repeating this disinformation. RFK is not against the polio vaccine. He has said that vaccines are not 100% safe and effective for all people. Like it or not, that statement is actually true. Every vaccine carries a risk of side effects or dangerous reactions. For most people and most vaccines, the risks are extremely small and the benefits are much greater. But the risks are not zero. He is right. That doesn't make him a polio anti-vaxxer.

I understand he had polio, but I could not name a single person in my life that had polio.

Do we still need a polio vaccine if it no longer is out there?

If it is out there is communities I have not heard of, is there a treatment for the people that have it instead of immunizing entire populations?

What are side effects of both vaccine and treatment?

I am glad the Senate confirmed Robert F. Kennedy Jr, and I love watching health experts melting down.

"I think it's a sad day for America's children. I think it's a sad day for public health when someone who is a science denialist, conspiracy theorist, and virulent anti-vaccine activist is [leading] the biggest public health agency in the United States," says Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who has served on vaccine advisory committees for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "I think every Senator who voted for his confirmation should be ashamed of themselves for their unwillingness to stand up for the health of the American public."

.Dr. Rob Davidson is an emergency physician in Michigan and executive director of the Committee to Protect Health Care, which had circulated a petition garnering more than 22,000 signatures from physicians calling on the Senate to reject Kennedy. Davidson says he worries about how Kennedy will respond to emerging diseases, such as H5N1, more commonly known as bird flu. In addition to his anti-vaccine rhetoric, Kennedy has previously suggested putting a pause on infectious disease research, sparking backlash from many public health experts.

"He's just a dangerous individual when it comes to public health," Davidson says. "It's dangerous to have a guy who's led [the vaccine skepticism] movement being the head of this agency, the mouthpiece of the U.S. government when it comes to public health. So that is truly terrifying."

"I think a lot of lives are at risk potentially because of this person running this agency," Davidson continues.

What are side effects of both vaccine and treatment?
Good and valid questions. We stopped using live oral polio in 2000 due to most cases being from a baby passing the live weakened polio virus to gramps. The current version is dead and injected and usually given in a combo shot with several other vaccines (pentacel for example). The reason we still give it is due to vaccine refusers primarily in Africa where the tribal leaders spread lies about the WHO workers injecting HIV into people. We have had recent outbreaks in USA in communities with low vaccination rates.

We were on the verge of eliminating polio like small pox but due to world travel, vaccine refusals increasing and the inability of WHO to get those last tribal pockets vaccinated it is actually increasing now.

There is no treatment for polio. Like nearly all vaccines they are for dangerous and either untreatable virus or rapidly dangerous bacteria (HiB, strep pneumo, neisseria).

From an AI query:
The United States experienced a significant polio outbreak in 2022, which led to the country being confirmed as having circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV)[1]. The outbreak centered in New York State, with a case of paralytic polio identified in an unvaccinated adult in Rockland County in July 2022[3]. This case, along with poliovirus detections in wastewater samples from communities near the patient's residence, met the World Health Organization's criteria for cVDPV[1].

Wastewater surveillance detected genetically related poliovirus circulating between April 2022 and February 2023 in several New York counties, including Rockland, Orange, Nassau, and Sullivan, as well as New York City[3]. This indicated the presence of other asymptomatic or non-paralytic polio cases in these areas.

As of September 1, 2023, no new cases had been detected since the initial case in July 2022[3]. However, the situation remains concerning as even a single case of polio is considered an outbreak and a public health emergency[3].

## Recent Developments

While there have been no reported cases of wild poliovirus in the United States, vaccine-derived polio has been a concern:

1. In the last two years, vaccine-derived polio has been spotted in the United States[5].
2. As of 2023, there were no reported cases of paralytic poliomyelitis in the U.S., compared to about 16,000 cases per year in the 20th century[6].

The CDC and state health departments continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of vaccination to prevent further spread of the virus.
