So Trump is going to tariff those countries who tariff us. Sounds fair to me.
Let's do it!

The "free market" and "capitalist" crowd here are going to go into meltdown mode but Trump chugs on.

President Donald Trump set an Oval Office news conference on his plan to impose reciprocal tariffs on other countries for Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.
Trump's all-caps post on Truth Social announcing the presser offered no details about the plan, which remains opaque.

In another post earlier Thursday, Trump hyped up the forthcoming tariffs, writing, "TODAY IS THE BIG ONE: RECIPROCAL TARIFFS!!!"

The new tariffs will follow duties Trump has already slapped on China, Canada and Mexico, as well as on imports of steel and aluminum. Trump's tariffs on Canada and Mexico were paused for 30 days after both countries pledged to crack down on illegal crossings and drug trafficking at their respective borders with the U.S.

The new tariffs were expected to come prior to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit with Trump at the White House on Thursday afternoon.

He is going to place tariffs on countries who were already tariffing us. You think no countries had tariffs on US goods until January 21, 2025?

I don't think the free market and capitalist crowd cares if we tariff countries who are tariffing us. If there's already a tariff on our goods, then the market has already been distorted, so we should respond in kind and ideally they go away on both sides.

Yup. That is what a lot of people don't understand.

They think Trump is picking fights here. We were getting screwed by all countries and Trump is restoring parity. You tariff us, we tariff you back. Sounds fair to me.

100%.
However I think Trump needs to explain this more clearly. Even on TA we have people screaming about tariffs. Why? Either they are dumb or uninformed. I like to believe that they don't know about how things were.

Trump should state this clearly when he signs the EO.

And repeat it twice slowly since we have so many stupid people in this country who don't get it.

If foreign coutries don't want the new tariffs, all they have to do is drop their already existing tariffs that have given them an unfair trading advantage and it all goes away.

Depends on who you are talking to. A lot of "free market" folks think it's ok for other countries to do it to us but we shouldn't do it to them. They just hate anything to do with tariffs but since we can't control other countries all we can do is not have them here. There are also a lot of "free market" folks that profit or gain power off of the status quo.

Trump has made it pretty clear he is fine with getting rid of most tariffs so long as other countries do the same with some exceptions for industries that are national security issues like steel. What Trump is doing is throwing down the gauntlet at these countries. Either they lower their tariffs for us or they start making stuff in the US, otherwise we will price them out of the market and they need our market a lot more than we need theirs.

You got it. Perfectly explained.
I am guessing it is the people born in the 50s and 60s who still think America is "great" and we have unlimited wealth and prosperity and it is our responsibility to help others. China is laughing at our stupidity.

The Indian Prime Minister is visiting DC today. India applies a lot of tariffs on us. Modi and Trump have good relations, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Yes, but we've had tariffs on the vast majority of countries also. There are very few, if any, countries we don't tariff. I thought this was an escalation of Canada and others responding to our new tariffs.

So what Trump is doing is applying tariffs on those who tariff us (fair competition).
And possibly using it as a tool against some who are screwing with us in different areas (like immigration, drugs).

I don't like tariffs since I'm a Conservative and tariffs are idiotic liberal fiscal policy. But, if a country is doing it to us already, I don't care as much about the situation. **** 'em and feed 'em fish heads.

It'll **** our citizens, like all liberalism does, but might make said countries drop their tariffs.

I just wish his initial fiscal response wasn't always liberal.

Nearly every country is putting tariffs on certain products or sectors. Trump is not trying to level the playing field he is using tariffs with certain countries in a broader negotiation.

Agree because many people do not know the definition of "reciprocal".

Seems that may have something to do with the abysmal reading scores in many of our K-12th grade schools, thank you very much to the Department of Education.

Quote:

On Trade, I have decided, for purposes of Fairness, that I will charge a RECIPROCAL Tariff meaning, whatever Countries charge the United States of America, we will charge them - No more, no less!

For purposes of this United States Policy, we will consider Countries that use the VAT System, which is far more punitive than a Tariff, to be similar to that of a Tariff. Sending merchandise, product, or anything by any other name through another Country, for purposes of unfairly harming America, will not be accepted. In addition, we will make provision for subsidies provided by Countries in order to take Economic advantage of the United States. Likewise, provisions will be made for Nonmonetary Tariffs and Trade Barriers that some Countries charge in order to keep our product out of their domain or, if they do not even let U.S. businesses operate. We are able to accurately determine the cost of these Nonmonetary Trade Barriers. It is fair to all, no other Country can complain and, in some cases, if a Country feels that the United States would be getting too high a Tariff, all they have to do is reduce or terminate their Tariff against us. There are no Tariffs if you manufacture or build your product in the United States.

For many years, the U.S. has been treated unfairly by other Countries, both friend and foe. This System will immediately bring Fairness and Prosperity back into the previously complex and unfair System of Trade. America has helped many Countries throughout the years, at great financial cost. It is now time that these Countries remember this, and treat us fairly A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR AMERICAN WORKERS. I have instructed my Secretary of State, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of the Treasury, and United States Trade Representative (USTR) to do all work necessary to deliver RECIPROCITY to our System of Trade!
