Maybe but it could also have been the least bad outcome depending on the circumstances.

One thing I thought was odd is that the captain on these is always a former pilot from my understanding.

I'm assuming you mean air not water?
Behold: the super rare post-reply double post

My bad. I came back and for some reason saw my typed post. Figured I closed without sending. Guess I did and maybe hit back?

Who's dumber, the phone it is operator.

You don't have to answer!

I figured something of the sort. Maybe a reply started in a tab, distraction, then a new tab for a new reply. I was kinda hoping Sea Speed would reply in the exact same way but I also couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Some pics. Not that bad, but why was the Truman only with a singe Destroyer (Dunham), if true per replies?

Wonder what their basis for assuming that is. There could easily be an escort group further out. There is always a plane-guard that is assigned direct to pick up pilots that may ditch or even crew that go overboard. The mention of "one" may simply be the direct screen.

The collision angle now makes even more sense. A sideswipe style collision is easier to stumble into in confined waters when passing close. Because you are accepting passing close in the first place so at that point a navigation error by either vessel doesn't have to be big.

Without doing some reading. I believe that has been the requirement since the 1930's. WWII was a weird transition time where most of the aircraft carrier captains were surface Captains (black shoe) and were sent to flight school in Pensacola to become a Naval Aviator (brown shoe). If I remember correctly "Bull" Halsey was a good example of this.

There were some Admirals that commanded carrier task forces that were not aviators. Fletcher comes to mind if I remember correctly.

Since then, all the captains have come from the air wing commander route and then commanded destroyers or other ships prior to getting command of a carrier. They also have to go to nuke school. Its not like they just pluck them out of the cockpit and say drive the boat.

I was not trying to insinuate that they had a direct cockpit to captain path, just that I find it odd that the vast majority of their career is not spent in or near the bridge of a ship and then they get made the captain of one of the most expensive pieces of equipment on the sea.

UPDATE
Looks like the damage is largely contained to the incinerator and especially the incinerator exhaust. Probably have to effect repairs in order to fully and properly manage their trash.

Is there another incinerator on the ship?

I'm not a navy guy but the folks who know ships/sailing a lot seem to think there are quite a few problems there right now. I think the USN changed policy at some point to use both 'green' eco friendly paint and not have sailors dangling over the side doing patch up painting while under way. I could be wrong, but I've seen too many gripes like the ship pictured here to believe it isn't mostly true.

Konrad I think is a merchant marine guy.

Can't we just toss it overboard like the Chinese Navy.

You think that's bad you should see the absolute pitiful shape our auxiliary fleet is in.

They stopped letting us acid wash the hull or use any other halfway decent rust remover and also would not let us use a boatswain's chair over the side. In the old days they would let us get a platform barge and we could use that to clean and paint the hull but i stopped seeing that several years ago.

Then you have the pitiful hiring standards, lack of willingness to remove dead weight and the mass brain drain due to covid lockdowns and complete inability of the office to effect timely crew changes. All of this has led to complacency, inability and indifference in a large part of that fleet. The complete lack of support from the office and inability to get me off for a crew change unless I essentially threatened to walk off were major influences in me leaving.

Man I could go on and on about how pitiful our auxiliary fleet is but no one wants to hear the ramblings of a bitter old man. Don't get me started on their new builds. Unbelievably bad.

Couldn't needle gun around the house except for something like 1000-1600 or something like that.

I essentially threatened to walk off my last ship. Two months overdue and shop was set to go away for a month a few days after I left which would have had me miss christmas and be gone for an additional month+. We were sitting in Norfolk for something like 2 weeks and they couldn't swap me out so I told them I'm leaving with or without a relief. Guess who got a relief? Never stepped foot on another ship of theirs again, thank goodness.
