Maybe there is another version of Pope John Paul II to step up and be the Pope the catholic church needs right now.

Regardless of all media misinformation about things the current Pope has said and done (and NOT done - despite the MSM's and catholic bashers attempts to credit him with), he has done a lot of harm to the Church's image.
It's not this Pope that matters. It's the people that decided he should be the Pope. Those people are not in the hospital and will not be retiring.

I find Catholic politics fascinating and followed the last two papal elections fairly closely. The Cardinals didn't elect Francis because they wanted a socialist, they elected him because they wanted a different ethos. John Paul II was a warrior, Benedict XVI was a thinker, and Francis is a humanitarian. I don't think anyone realized at the time that Francis had such naive and ignorant political views or that he would struggle to articulate his messages so much that his words could be twisted to fit almost any agenda. I also doubt the current cardinals would elect another pope like Francis just based on the number of very public disagreements and embarrassing "clarifications" the church has had to issue in response to some of his statements. Regardless, I think the next pope will again have a completely different ethos than the last three and I think, given the confusion wrought by Francis, it will be a strong teacher/communicator.

Francis appointed 75% of the college of cardinals so expect more of the same.

Forced retirement of cardinals has made change in the "unchanging church" a guarantee

It won't matter because the whole of the higher levels of priesthood are corrupt and they were the ones who put him there. Catholic church hierarchy needs a divine intervention.

Does it need DOGE?

DOCE - Department of Catholic Efficiency.

This.

He's a horrible pope, The political comments and the hypocrisy that he has spewed, especially over the last few years is really disconcerting, but I don't wish ill health on him. But it's clear that he has not been well for a long time. He needs to take the route that Benedict did.

The Young Pope and The New Pope are both good series to watch. Really intriguing about the election and politics of electing a pope.

Unfortunately that would be par for the course. Its not far from true that only the Politburo of the 20th C was more opaque about the fact when the leaders got ill. Reading between the lines is tricky as sometimes it really is not super serious.

about an unChristian marxist.

The Catholic church "leadership" seems to be more concerned with growing their power than actually helping people escape poverty. It seems to be no different than any political party.

This guy is a prime example and couldn't hold a candle to John Paul II.

As a lapsed Catholic, I just may start going to church again if they bring in somebody that is not a hard core leftist. JP II has always been my exemplar of what a Pope should be.

The power structure of the Catholic Church, much like many Western countries now, is beyond repair.

For the Catholics on here, please do not take this as me bashing on your faith. I live in a heavily Catholic community and support many of their causes and charities locally. They do plenty good. I do find the Vatican and larger hierarchy repulsive though.

Is this recency bias caused by a bad pope and a relatively ineffective one before that? Or would you have said the same thing during the JP II years?

plenty of socialists genuinely care for the poor. that doesn't excuse the fact that they create more poverty and suffering.

Popes come and go (a few are saints or great or good or bad or evil), but the Church continues. Pope Francois needs to accept that and retire.

Time to call it a day like Ratzinger did. Retire and enjoy your days.

I liked this Pope as he said some positive stuff. Usually all they care about is "heathens" and how to "convert the world" which is total bs.

Time for a new modern pope.

for false christ's and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders so as to lead astray. if possible even the elect.

this pope is a false prophet. nothing he said leads people to christ.

the devil knows scripture this false prophet used scripture when it helped him lead peole astray. he believes there are multiple paths to heaven not jut through christ

you may like what he said but he is wrong. i am not equipped to pass judgement but i know enough to know he is wrong and it is purposeful.

OK.

One can be both.

In the Pope's case, I'd imagine God knows what's in the heart of the one who leads His church.

That said, thank God the Pope will be alright and can continue to lead the church.

ever heard of Saint John Paul II?
I'm a protestant and I'd star this a millions times. That dude was a hero in every regard. Worked with Reagan and Thatcher to bring down the commies so the imprisoned in the old Soviet block could worship and spread the word in peace.
