New Smyrna and Sebastian inlet are great spots for up close shark watching.

New Smyrna Florida?
Was swimming w/ my daughters @ New Smyrna beach, we liked to go out to the second sand bar. I saw a couple of fins surface and said oh look a couple of dolphins, oops, then saw the black tips on the dorsal fins. They were a couple of 4-5 foot black tipped sand sharks. We made our way back to the beach before I told them.
That same day later in the afternoon we heard on the radio driving home, someone @ Orange beach, a few miles away from where we were, was attacked by a shark.

That show is funny as hell. Billy Bob plays the landman part like he's been doing it all his life. The quick wit and biting jabs is spot on for the character. I ran into these guys in oilfield all the time. Crusty SOBs.

Yep New Smyrna in Fl. day in day out one of the best surfing areas on the east coast and the sharks bite capital of the world. Pretty much going to see a Shark in the area while surfing

Sebastian isn't what it used to be but still nice. Big Bulls and a few whites. Cocoa Beach across from space force is nice and if you're not careful you'll drop in on some big time pros.

LOL are you serious? My buddy and I got about 200 ft away from a mature male on foot at a friend's ranch a few yrs ago and he turned around and looked at us, and there was something instinctually inside both of us that said "do not go any closer". I am sure we could have gotten closer and he would have trotted off...but those are straight up beasts. I dsimply did not trust the 9mm and .223 we had on us to do the job in the event he got pissed and wanted to steam roll us.

If you can't feel it in your plums when you get close to them, you just have zero survival instincts. It's one thing from an automibile or elevated position. But when you are on the ground with them, it's humbling.

I would add something else to your (bolded) assessment:

Despite the fact that I was 2-years-old when Jaws came out, by the time I was 5 people were still terrified of sharks. Nobody would even think of "engaging" a shark.

What has happened since then?

An barrage of media telling us we have been unnecessarily afraid of sharks.
