SAN ANTONIO - A new state Senate bill has been introduced in Texas to provide expanded property tax relief for disabled veterans who are not 100% disabled. The bill seeks to update what some see as outdated legislation.

Under current Texas law, veterans with a disability rating between 70% and 90% receive a $12,000 deduction from the value of their home. Addicott explained, "The benefit is great if you're 100% disabled, but if you're 90% disabled, for example, you have a $400,000 home, you only get a $12,000 deduction from the $400,000, so you still have to pay taxes on 388,000."

He proposed changes to Senator Mayes Middleton, suggesting a sliding scale for tax reductions based on the percentage of disability. "He has it so that 100% gets 100% on the property taxes, 90% gets a 90% on the property taxes reduction, 80% gets 80%, all the way down to 10%, which is the way it should be," Addicott said.

Seems like the current system was invented when houses costed a LOT less. $5000, $7500, $10,000, $12,000 are the amounts now unless you're 100% disabled.

Drop this and do something for EVERYONE.... 100% exemption for properties with a Homestead Exception instead of the +10% cap BS. Pay a tax when you purchase the property and then nothing else for as long as the house is your primary residence. Rental & commercial properties stay fair game.

It's abused. My neighbor is "disabled" (back) from non combat time in the military. Still works and is outside on weekends working like a 20 yr old. No way shape or form disabled. I think combat is warranted but not much else.

You can still go back and apply. And if you get approved, it will be back dated to the date you first apply and they will pay you a lump sum catch up. But only to the date you applied. So every day you wait to apply is potentially costing you $$$

I think it's pretty well established calling them disabled has nothing to do with their ability...for better or worse.

Injuries and medical conditions that can be directly attributed to service in a combat zone. Sucking on burn pit fumes for a year. None of these things?

That's a red herring and you know it.

His point is that you're already being compensated for those things - ie they mean something.

Should the grocery store reduce the price that "disabled" veterans pay for milk? I mean, if they don't, they think the veterans service was for nothing. Am I right?

They're getting sizable checks from the VA and can either work, are on disability or have mil retirement. Why shouldn't they pay property tax? Do they use state and local services?
