"Yosemite National Park is 759,620 acres" roughly 1000 acres per summer employee. That is a lot of ground to cover for a park ranger (I know most of it is mountains).

Sounds like the locksmith's supervisor needs to be fired because he couldnt step in there to do it. Surely there was a plan of some bolt cutters somewhere. What did they do when this guy was sick or on vacation?

Should have asked him to tell someone else where the keys were. These aren't complicated equations. Clearly management is trying to agitate the public.

And to the dipsh** that gets locked in a restroom, you probably shouldn't be at the park anyway. Thank the Trump administration for making you wait a day on the sh**er instead of your inevitable death by some other Darwinian means in the park.

Nobody is irreplaceable. There is no way with that many locks that someone else wasn't capable and prepared to do his job. Whatever did they do when this guy was sick or on vacation? This is sensationalism looking for a story to gig Musk and Trump.

You just assume everyone who works for the park service is a liberal. What about the USDA? APHIS?

I had a reservation canceled at a NP over spring break that I had to enter a lottery to get. I'm sure the ranger that was going to lead the tour was a relatively new employee. That sucks for us. Hopefully the park will have enough staff to be open when we arrive. I'm mad as hell about it. But it isn't the park - it's Trump being an idiot. (And I gladly voted for him, and would do it again.)

It is very wrong to assume that all government cuts are worthy and good. As a strong proponent and frequent visitor to national parks, these cuts make my blood boil because they aren't based on performance, necessity or essential need of the role. In other words, as a staunch conservative, I feel the cuts are stupid and without plan or reason. They are just being done for revenge.

There is waste and corruption in every government agency. So instead of just cutting people for the sake of it, wouldn't it be better to root out unproductive employees and unnecessary positions, and use merit? There are people at my company that need to be cut, based on merit or lack thereof.

It really sucks for people who have spent thousands of $$ to visit Yosemite to get there suddenly there is no one at the park to operate the park, including a locksmith. Yellowstone and Yosemite are huge. I would think that it would take a lot of people to run those parks, even without waste.

I am all for cuts of bureaucracy, but I didn't sign up for what happening.

What are you going to do when there are no food inspectors at the USDA? Or no APHIS inspectors? Or no one to disease test for avian influenza? Nope. Let's cut those people because they are all "liberals."

Sometimes conservatives are the dumbest people on the planet. And the cuts have already gone too far, IMO, because they haven't been done wisely. They've just been done to appease a base. We will all pay for it.

My company has several hundred employees. Surely we can replace the one maintenance guy with someone from IT or a secretary to save money. Hell, maybe your company should fire all the secretaries and receptionists and just randomly route incoming calls. It'll just be a distributed responsibility to answer the phone and direct people to the right person.

They have a locksmith because all those 1000 other employees have jobs to do that don't involve locksmithing.

And surely we can stop defending the indefensible. If Donald Trump has to visit every location of every agency in the federal government to make sure it is being run correctly, the average federal employee is even worse than I thought and we are wasting far more taxpayer money than I ever would have believed possible.

I was at Independence hall the other day and one of the NPS park guides giving a tour was discussing the precedent set by Washington of serving 2 terms. She ended it with "and ever since, the power of the presidency has been transferred peacefully with 2 exceptions: Lincoln's election before the Civil War and January 6th."

LOL, as a 2Lt, I knew enough to be dangerous, but enough to get things done-- even when that call at 4:45 to get over to HQs and make sure the Christmas lights were up correctly, so the General wouldnt be pissed off. Guess with Signal MOS, the Colonel knew I could hang wire.

Also a locksmith is more than just knowing where the keys are. They swap out cores, cut keys, fix broken locks and they may be in charge of checking keys in and out. Plus it's likely not just buildings, it could be vehicles, trailers etc.

My employer has 2 full time locksmiths and there are times where that's not enough.

The cuts seem to have not been done wisely because of the completely inefficient and illogical way the government operates.

If cutting a single new, probationary employee causes a shutdown of a park, then the problem is not with cutting that person.

I have been to several national parks including Yellow Stone and Big Bend. I never spoke to a Park Ranger any of the times. Now, I know they have a lot of behind-the-scenes work to do, but this is silly that ONE person had the keys to all of this park. Sounds like a Barney Fife situation that the other rangers are too stupid to be trusted with key to a toilet.

It gives a window to just abolish the present setup and re-structure to a more tourist friendly format. Also sell some of the land that seems excessively held by federal hands. Not the spectacular parks, but some sections of some of those states that are just locked up.

I'm no scientologist , but I think we'll make it as a country. I know it's a very tumultuous time and things are touch and go since a lock smith got fired, but keep the faith and hold steady. It will be ok. I promise.
