He might be able to call the special election for May 3rd. It's tight, but doable.

As a long time public servant, it was appropriate that Sylvester spent his last night listening to a great leader and speaker.

In that district does it even matter when the election is? Result will be the same, no?

RIP.

Who gets that district now? Definitely another grifter. Probably of darker melanin.

As the old joke goes.

DRILL SARGENT to private : You hate me so much, that when I am dead and you have been drummed out of the army, you will piss on my grave

PRIVATE to SARGENT : No Sargent, when I leave the army, I never want to stand in line again.

I agree, hate is bad. It is always better to outlive someone, then to hate them.

Dems probably offed him to take some attention away from their disastrous strategy last night.

Shorter timelines favor career politicians and people with a lot of money. There could be better candidates who could benefit from more time to spin up a campaign operation.

Amanda Edwards is probably the best equipped to hit the ground running, but since Texas does not have primaries for these types of elections, one Republican running against 15 Democrats has an outsized chance of being successful.

doesn't it still require a majority, or there is a runoff?

there is no chance any republican gets over 50% no matter how large the field

I don't cheer when people I don't like die.

But I also don't feel sad. He was a crooked POS and stole money from the taxpayers, his constituents that he claimed to be "helping".

There would be a runoff, but a special election runoff in an odd-numbered year with nothing else on the ballot and no municipal election in November is more favorable for Republicans if they can get their **** together in the district and be motivated.

But if a Republican were to eek out a win in a special election, they would still lose in 2026.

If we can get it in May by itself we may be able to sneak someone in. Does it have to be a democrat, or is it a true election?

Like slashing their pensions and giving money to the police instead. They were half Buzbees campaign staff for the runoff.

Sadly, I'd say the odds of that are as likely as Hillary being elected president one day.

It's basically come one, come all. There's no partisan primary.

"more favorable" meaning 'maybe get 40%"?

no one should get their hopes up. this is a solidly blue district.

Think like a politician. The House is on the slimmest of margins. Turners empty seat will favor GOP margin for the duration. That's why I think he slow plays it

Buzbee screwed that race up by not declaring as a Republican. He could of won had he picked a party. Unfortunately he's an opportunist, not a politician.

I am neither cheering nor mourning the death of Sylvester Turner. Because the Texas 18th congressional district has been solidly blue since 1972, there is almost no chance of flipping it red.

District is highly gerrymandered, both to create a minority-majority district and to concentrate guaranteed D votes away from other districts.

Turner was a horrible mayor for Houston and has been a horrible politician his entire life. He made a lot of horrible decisions that were not good for his constituents. It's understandable that some people aren't terribly compassionate.

Not being upset that he died and wishing him death/celebrating it are two different things.

But he has died and he's in God's hands now, so it is done. If only we all could all be as pious you are …on a political forum.

Or maybe he's not. I always have a hard time believing truly awful people have honestly accepted Christ as their savior. Because if they did, they would not act the way they do. Yes, nobody is perfect and we all slip up on occasion. But a repeated habit of outright corruption and theft and lying....that's not indicative of someone who really believes.
