The Senate is weighing a major change to federal fuel-economy rules that would kneecap the policy that dramatically reduced gas consumption and helped create fuel-efficient cars like the Toyota Prius hybrid.

Republican senators are proposing a change to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, rules as part of President Trump's wide-ranging tax and spending bill. If enacted, the proposal would eliminate fines for violating CAFE, all but nullifying rules that for generations have pushed automakers to churn out ever cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles. That technology has saved two trillion gallons of gasoline over the past 50 years, according to the journal Energy Policy.
..
"The combination of high penalties with the nearly impossible CAFE standards finalized during the previous administration is a major problem," said John Bozzella, president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents most major carmakers.
..
Some carmakers have already signaled they are preparing to step up production of gas-powered cars. GM said last month it would invest $888 million to repurpose an electric vehicle plant to make V-8 engines. Stellantis also said it is bringing back the HEMI V-8 in the 2026 Ram 1500 pickup.

This is what talmbout! Get rid of small displacement turbocharged 4 bangers that nobody wants and give us real engines.

I don't mind fuel efficiency but we've reached the point of diminishing returns and the cost of it is growing to be ridiculous.

Not only that but the US could use an influx of Kei trucks and long bed small work trucks. Badly.

Hopefully it gets rid of the engine cutting off at red lights.
It must save fuel mileage on their gov't MPG or they wouldn't do it but everything else about it is crap.

This **** should have been stripped out day 1

Consumers want fuel efficiency. The market will incentivize it, but in the right way. Not this nonsense that results in ridiculous trade-offs, higher prices, and the lack of desirable supply of some vehicles

If there's a market for it, sure. I think Dodge is being smart. They'll likely have the only naturally aspirated engine in their class. Toyota went turbo six with disastrous results and has yet to regain their reputation for quality. Nissan just decided to stop making the Titan altogether rather than invest in a new engine.

False. It actually dramatically increased gas consumption. The Prius would have been designed and built regardless, based on economic forces.

Trump has already killed that! I think he did it by executive order and when he did it he said "Everybody hates it"!

This would be one of the best things to happen for American consumers in a long time. It's about time we quit letting the environmental wackos determine auto emissions policy for the American auto industry.

Fantastic Senate. I can't wait to hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth from Shumer and his band of idiots.

Well if we're going to bankrupt our society via government spending, the least they could do is let me drive what I want. Frankly the standard is outdated because of the environmental wackos and social media. There are natural market pressures for fuel efficient vehicles, but there's also a market for cheap small vehicles that may not meet CAFE standards.

Mandated fuel efficiencies piss me off just slightly less than mandated building efficiency initiatives like all the energy codes.

All of these mandates are predicated on the idea that the government has the authority to tell you, a private consumer, how much of a commodity you should be allowed to buy and use. They just sell it as saving the planet, but it really is about stripping your rights and controlling your behavior.

CAFE was supposed to improve fuel economy, but in reality its main effect was to incentivize the auto industry to switch from "passenger cars" to "light trucks" with laxer standards. Thus increasing the average mass of a new vehicle by 35% since 1980. Thus putting more wear and tear on our roads, and causing the USA to now be experiencing an increase in pedestrian deaths which hasn't happened in other, less dumb countries.

Amen. I hope they also discontinue the ridiculous diesel engine DEF mandate. Worst thing to happen to diesel engines since they were invented.

I have 2 F150s with Ecoboost. They were great up until they hit about 140k and I've spent well over $5k each on the engines and turbos since. It's basic physics. If you keep putting more and more pressure in the engine to get higher performance with less fuel you will wear things out.

I recently got my other son a 2020 Tacoma with the V6. That thing has 300k miles written all over it. I'd love to get a Tundra with the old V8 to replace my F150s at some point but they stopped making them in 2021 and now have their own version of the Ecoboost.

Car companies are fine with all of this crap btw, it makes cars break down faster and encourages people to replace them before they do. They don't want you to have a good and low maintenance vehicle you can put 250k plus miles on, they want you to lease something new every few years. Same thing applies to home appliances in a different way. They want to put lots of things you don't need but give some benefits knowing they will wear out the product faster or make it too expensive to fix and get you to buy a new one.

Let consumers drive the market not some nameless and faceless idiots in DC. If people want electric, fine. If people want turbos, fine. If people want a remake of a 1970 Buick with a 455 engine and gets 8MPG, fine.

Under-rated post by BonfireNerd.

Almost all governmental regulations by the numbers: 1) pick winners and losers in drafting the law/rule, the regulation will be ineffective, and the "unforseeable" side effects will be worse than the original problem they sought to cure.

I'm lusting for Ford to produce a quad turbo Godzilla motor. I've never driven the 455 but the 403 that replaced it still had plenty of torque.

Yeah it resulted in American econoboxes no one wanted, lighter vehicles that resulted in higher death rates for a while until they figured out ways around it, and the unintended consequences of everyone buying trucks and SUVs because they were bigger, safer, and higher so drivers can see better.

The new GM 2.7 turbomax is a damn good engine. And plenty of people want it. I'd prefer it over the 5.3 V8. Also, BMW has made some absolutely killer turbo 4's.

But you won't buy either TESLAG so why?

Big problem is initial cost and long term maintenance and reliability I have 250k miles on my truck and about $5k-$7k in non scheduled maintenance. A 2.7L turbo will easily by 3x at this mileage and also costs 2x initially

5.3L crate engine $3k
2.7L crate engine $7k (no turbo)
