This is a problem. I'm sure every person in authority that interacted with the killer throughout his life knew that he was mentally unstable. The conversation about what to do with people like this before they commit horrific crimes probably needs its own thread.

As a result, the crime rate in Charlotte dropped significantly and the town exploded.

Those leaders are long gone and the city has reverted to what it was 30 years ago, run by a grifting class rivaled only by the group that runs Atlanta. Charlotte's growth will be significantly stunted by what has transpired over the last few years, and nobody will be held to account. It will be blamed on "white flight" when what has really caused the problems is a culture driven by racial 'justice'.

I lived in Charlotte for a few years starting in 2002. I moved there from D/FW, so to me it seemed like a small town. I go there now and barely recognize anything. The suburbs have just exploded.

The political climate you describe can be summed up in one person, Pat McCrory. He technically worked for Duke all the time he was mayor, but I'm not entirely sure he had an actual job with them. He was a congenial RINO who governed by consensus, and a big civic booster. That worked very well in a mostly blue town. However, it did not translate to success when he became governor with a newly minted conservative GOP majority in the legislature.

Don't worry. Charlotte is super serious about cleaning this up.
