The people who cannot wrap their heads around the fact that your federal withholding has no impact on the amount and rate you pay at the end of the year.

They see the higher withholding as a higher tax and seek to avoid it.

Hence "they tax my bonus at like 39%!!!"…

What does a shutdown entail in real terms?

I just googled this as I really don't know. Guess what. It's absolutely nothing of any real consequence. Anything important is essential and the train keeps rolling down the tracks.

If Trump would designate the National Park Service as essential then absolutely no one would notice a government "shutdown".

Speaking of BLM, there has to be a way for Trump to troll on that.

Maybe at headquarters in DC declare it BLM Plaza and have a BLM celebration.

Change the logo to look like the fist. Build a new district office in Minneapolis at the site of a certain convenience store…

So many ideas.

There is no such thing as a "government shutdown" as under lapses in appropriations (which is what this is) significant portions of the government remain open as many have prior year funds they can use to maintain operations. There are mission essential functions that must remain in place even without funding. As others have pointed out, all feds will get back pay. Also keep in mind, there is an industrial base that supports large parts of the government to include things like national defense that these lapses have an impact on.

I say this as someone who thinks government spending needs to be reigned in....we don't even know how many federal agencies there are! But these "shutdowns" do not result in any cost savings or any changes that people want.

Even though I made a crack about the NPS, I do feel bad for people on vacays and long planned excursions that have their plans fubar-ed cause the children cannot get along.

But that really is the only thing that most everyday Americans would ever notice.

That and TSA will probably stage another sick out funded by soros to make the Rs look bad.

Throw in tickriders inspecting wildlife and livestock along the river for fever ticks and now screwworms.

And let's just eliminate TSA all together, it has caught exactly zero terrorist.

My thought is that after shutdown, Republicans need to introduce a bill to exempt say Active military. And make the Dems agree to it or vote against it. One issue after another. Plenty of exemptions agreed to during previous shutdowns.

In fact, this might be the best way to slow down governmental growth - single line exemptions.

Of course, that will never happen, republicans love their pork, too.

Abandon the border, close sea ports, shut down domestic and international travel, no weather service, …..that jjst scratches the surface. I know it sounds "F16 trendy", but think before you type.

Define "essential services". I'm surprised your lib talking point news letter didn't throw in grandma's SS check in there.

Some things are just not that hard.

Damn……..busted again. Ol' B-1 83 is actually a closet leftist (75% of the "conservatives" on here are more like "Classic liberals"). I guess you missed this part:

Close it all down.

It's an oft repeated rally cry, and is quite populist in nature, for those who have no earthly idea what they're blathering about and what a total, pure shutdown would mean.

Send the clean CR up for a vote in the senate and let the democrats filibuster. It will show that the democrats are the obstructionists.

If the government can "shut down" and my life goes on wholly unchanged....then that's a sign right now they're doing absolutely nothing for me to start with. Get rid of them permanently.

The federal government does a few good things like the nps. By and large it's bureaucrats collecting a check they didn't earn. Hopefully Trump and his team can totally reshape the federal workforce and significantly reduce it as well.

The dept of education is up first as McMahon said they'll furlough 1,700 people tonight.

1. They are very entertaining.
2. The "healthcare for illegals" blaring 24/7 would be epic
3. Let government go home. At least at home they can't **** anything up and they get paid anyway.

Question: Does the government save any money during a shutdown? Meals for employees, meetings, travel, etc? Seems like there may be a $0.65 savings at least somewhere.

But, I admit I'm selfish and these shutdowns provide some really good entertainment.

Agree. Time to lay off more worthless government employees.

A. Retired 9 years ago after 35 years. Been through lots of shutdowns, and we were threatened with personnel action of we worked.
B. My "union" was nothing more than a lobbying organization for ag people to get such outrageous things as flex schedules so we could get to work before sunrise when the ground was still frozen for some surveys, or work late at distant offices and not be forced to spend the night. Not your typical Fed union. &$#@ those DC union SOBs.

OK, time for an F16 civics lesson. The GOP has a majority in the Senate, but they need 60 votes to pass the funding measure.

I assume the 60 votes are needed to prevent a filibuster? However it that were the case, I should be able to turn on the TV and see the Donks filibustering. Keep the Senate in session. We know Schumer can drone on for hours on end, but force him to do so with no bathroom breaks.

Or do budget bills have a special 60 vote requirement?
Who?mikejones!
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They need 60 votes. Dont need to filibuster.

Thr senate should schedule a vote for 9am and 1pm to pass the clean budget passed by the house and let the dems continually vote it down. No negotiations. Just continued no votes to a clean bill

If a shutdown gives Trump and OMB broadcast authority to fire federal employees and gut the deep state, why would the Republican senate leaders be anxious to keep scheduling votes?

Let it play out.

If they do away with filibuster rule, the real filibuster is actually better, the senator that is filibustering can take breaks by being ask a question by a friendly senator, the qustion can be very long and drawn out so the filibustering senator can take a break.

Should just open all the parks gates and say its free come at your own risk.

Sounds like that is what they are doing this time (per Politico):

If you're making plans to visit the magnificent national parks, you're good to get in just don't expect to see many, if any, staff clearing trails or cleaning toilets.

The Interior Department, which oversees the National Park Service, is keeping park roads, lookouts, trails and open-air memorials open during the shutdown, according to the agency's latest contingency plan. But it's also furloughing 64 percent of NPS staff while the funding impasse persists.

The agency is maintaining some law enforcement, fire suppression, emergency response and power maintenance operations at most of the country's 400-plus national parks while warning that "only basic or no visitor services" are running.
