We are working on beef, and I think we have a deal on beef that's going to bring the price [down]... That would be the one product that we would say is a little bit higher than we want it, maybe higher than we want it, and that's going to be coming down pretty soon too. We did something, we worked our magic.

Feeder cattle futures are down over 2% so far this morning.

Every single cattle rancher I know voted for him.

Finally, we have a good market, and now he's going to undercut it.

1 lb of ground beef is nearly $8. A few years ago that was $4. Food cost inflation is ridiculous.

This. Beef prices are at stupid levels

Maybe a good market for the cattle growers. When ground beef is $6.50/lb, it's not a good market for the consumer. Last week, I bought two lbs of ground chuck and two lbs of shrimp for meals for the week. They cost the same amount. I should not be paying shrimp prices for ground beef. At the end of the day, people will stop buying it and the market will tank itself.

we should have elected a marxist to continue the regime. she promised to go after big food for price gouging

...so anyway, what is the deal they got done and what is the "undercut" OP is referring to? lower price for consumer is not as economical for the producer.. same as oil and gas. there has to be some balance.

I have cows and I can't understand the outrage here. Prices are insane. Go out and touch some grass.

Same. Need more context to justify this 'outrage'.

It seems the market should be handling these prices and not the government.

Best guess folks have on X is buying more South American beef to undercut American ranchers.

So is Trump making it easier to allow competition in this market? I would think our honorable ranchers would support capitalism.

Specifically, why is the market tanking? This is a lazy OP.

There's a happy medium, he'll find it. Unclench your pearls. He's not out to bankrupt the cattle industry. It has gotten a bit out of hand lately. Not sure what he's doing or if he should but he has done too many other good things that I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bath water.

I haven't cooked a brisket in a while. Would love for them to go down. And hamburger is nuts.

Welp, the rest of the carnivores in America want beef prices to come back down to normal levels. I'm not too worried about cattle ranchers grumbling about it.

Whenever someone in the government says, "We did something, we worked our magic," I have to stop and wonder why they think they need to in the first place. If the answer is that they decided to deregulate and get out of the way of the free market then that's great. But more often it means they are doing something that is ultimately going to make matters worse.

I priced brisket at Sam's the other day. No thanks. Got a pork belly instead. Pound for pound it's way cheaper and it's like eating a big slab of bacon.

Minimum for a decent brisket at HEB is around $65 and most of what they carry is over $100.

Until domestic numbers get back, there is no way this will "tank" the cattle market. These are t chickens we're talking about, and cattle numbers are slow to rebound.

That's a non-essential problem according to F16.

I thought all the pricing problems with beef was from the processors not from the ranchers. Is this no longer the case?

It may very well be a good market for you, but it is horrible for the consumer.

Ranchers did not fully resupply stock, for whatever reason, and the American people are tired of paying $8 for a pound of ground beef. It's ludicrous.

Ground beef is pretty much the only cow we buy now because we can't swallow paying the exorbitant prices for any of the quality cuts.

I'm sure you know given your background but cattle numbers are the lowest they've been since the 60's and I doubt they will ever rebound to what they were.

I thought campaign and early admin talk about tariffs was to make it easier for US beef to be exported. UK and EU won't buy our beef due to bad rep/lies about our beef quality (hormones, chemicals, etc.) and unfair tariffs on us (while we don't tariff others in our one-way "free market"). If tariffs make imported Argentine, Brazilian, Aussie beef more expensive, it should be good for our US beef industry, but in the short run as markets adjust, bad for consumers. That seems to be playing out.. but what is OP mad about - speculation on X based on that quote in the OP? How about we wait and see what "deal" has been done?

In principle, I agree with this, but maybe part of letting the market handle prices is reducing regulation to allow the market to buy from new sources, i.e., less gov't.

As long as there's grass to graze there will be a rebound. Getting $1200 for a worn out hamburger cow and lingering drought in some areas was incentive enough to sell.

My guess is that there are a whole lot more beef buyers than beef growers. The politics just don't work for the beef growers.

We're still 120$ over where we were last fall. One limit down day in this clown show market is not a whole lot considering no one even blinks at 4-5$ swings anymore.

A week of limit down then we can talk
