The secret to snitching is to get famous for it. It's the best protection.

It sounds like the NBA has known about this for a long time, but has done nothing. Because supposedly they didn't find anything in their investigation that rose to the level of action. Now their excuse is that they don't have the same powers of investigation that the FBI has. But at some level I don't think they care a ton about whether the big gambling companies get ripped off. They care about the money that flows into them from gambling. And they care about the perception of their league. And sometimes sweeping things under the rug is the best way to handle things.

There's a lot of scuttlebutt surrounding Maverick Carter and his involvement with a lot of shady gambling in the NBA.
Carter was investigated in November 2021 by the DOJ but was never charged for his direct involvement in questionable betting on NFL and NBA games. In the current indictments Player 3 has been identified as LeBron James. Player 4 is Anthony Davis. LeBron James has a history of questionable injuries and taking himself out of games and a lot of performance bets involving him where a lot of bets paid off on the under a lot. In a deposition Maverick Carter said he couldn't recall any bets he may have or may not have made involving the Lakers.
It's just a matter of time before people start singing like a bird, when facing bankruptcy and years in prison.

The gambling generates the interest and the interest drives ratings. Obviously, ratings mean money. So while the gambling doesn't, as far as I can tell (someone can prove me wrong here) directly flow into the league's or a team's income statement, it indirectly generates millions and has for decades.
