At this point, no reason to fly any more aircraft into the storm until it passes Jamacia and weakens.

That is at least 3 times aircraft have been forced to abort their missions in the last 24 hours, two NOAA P-3s and now a USAF WC-130J.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Down to 893mb of pressure, making it the 2nd strongest known hurricane of all time.

Fourth in the Atlantic behind Wilma, Gilbert, and the Labor Day hurricane of 1935.

Numerous western Pacific typhoons have gone below 890 with Typhoon Tip holding the worldwide record at 870mb.

Thanks for correction. I thought only Gilbert still held the record. This may be the 2nd strongest at landfall in any case.

Going back how many thousands of years? Do we have that data?

On Ryan's feed of Montego Bay, all eyes are on a partially detached gutter that is clinging by one edge, so far.

Isn't "being in the eye" a good thing?

No, because of what you have to endure to get there. First the eye wall storms one way, then again the other way.

Yes, but it usually means you took the brunt on the front end, and will get it again, usually worse, when the eye passes.

its just shows the size and devastation of this thing, that they would be in the eye for 2 hours, and face cat 5/cat 4 conditions on the front and back end of it.....Crazy stuff

Lotta folks don't know that Jamaica has some fairly high mountains and ridges on it. When a storm like this happens upon mountains what we saw happen in NC and TN with the storm will occur. Especially in parts of Jamaica that have been cleared. It is probably going to be really, really bad with that running water. God help those folks.

I can remember when Ivan hit GC. It took multiple years to get back to 75%. Jamaica is screwed

I have been up in the mountains outside Ocho Rios. The people who live up there have ramshackle shacks with dirt floors for the most part. Those places and anyone in them will be wiped out. They also don't have power so getting the word out to evacuate would not reach them.

Decades. Additionally b/c of the resorts and the corruption of the govt there is going to be a lot of social unrest and some resentment over their tourist industry. Jamaica goes through waves of that every few decades. I bet the next bout is pretty bad.

I spent close to 48 hours in the right side eyewall of Cat 4 Wilma in Cozumel when the storm stalled over the Yucatan Channel in 2005. The 45 minutes or so that we got to spend in the calm of the eye were in no way worth the beating we took before and after.

Not to mention that the government and the resources in the Caymans are light years ahead of what they have in Jamaica. Jamaica doesn't have an international banking industry to rely on to bankroll the recovery.

True. I loved the Caymans and looked into maybe moving there at one point. Talk about a strict immigration system! Hard as hell to get to stay there back then.

But their jewelry stores were very reasonably priced.

Jamaica had a fighting chance of being a decent country, but their war on the wealthy drove out investment in the 70s.

It's a shame people can't learn the mistakes of socialism and class warfare.

China has started building hotels there in the past few years. Need to be smart about the recovery here.

Since this is a politics board and not a Weather board we should spend more time discussing the politics here.

why are many of the Carribean countries flush with tourist cash, from millions of tourists.

with the best weather in the world and beautiful beaches that millionaires from all over the world would want to live there...

but they are some of the poorest and most backwards nations in the world.

the ENTIRE population of Jamaica is less than just a part of Dallas metro!!

and yet they can't educate a few hundred thousand kids- with millions of dollars from the resorts pouring in.
