up here we have "SHEETZ" and "WAWA" which are the "luxury" alternatives to 7-Eleven along the highways.

they have now become so popular they are building them in the Maryland suburbs.

pretty good quality at lower price and actually fast.

only drawback is waiting around inside with all the riffraff

WAWA was great when I'd have to go check on, or hire/train, a team in Florida when I was a regional.

Bradento, Sarasota, etc

I love the WAWA coffee setup. Good sandwiches, too.

The fast food and fast casual places have all reported large drops in business from younger people and those under certain income levels. All part of the K economy.

Very true.

I frequent fast-casual places for lunch since they're healthier than fast food, and I've seen there be fewer and fewer people in them as time has gone by.

It says a lot when an increase of a buck or two for a meal can make things too expensive for people.

I've ordered the same meal fairly consistently at Whataburger since 2010. It was $12 back then. Today it's $25.

In 2010, I'd eat there 3-4x a week. In 2025, I eat there maybe 4-5x a year. I refuse to pay $25 for "fast" food, that isn't fast, and always has something wrong or missing. Might as well go to a real restaurant for that price and time commitment.

What on earth are you ordering for a single person from whataburger that costs $25

Must be pretty fat.

I'm a 6'6 middle aged dude sitting at 210. I definitely feel fat looking in the mirror but dexa scans say otherwise.

Triple with cheese, sub large onion ring and chocolate shake, add an extra 1-2 large order of fries. It's the only thing I eat for the day when I do that.

But hey, the texag fat asses are definitely going to judge.

lol. You are not fat at 6'6 and 210. Actually seems low to me.

1. Something like 20% of restaurants nationwide closed during the COVID years (more in places like NYC). Startups and re-starts have had a tough time coming back from that.
2. Dining habits of Gen-Z are significantly different than the older generations. They tend to be overly dependent on DoorDash and UberEats, with a significant shut-in percentage (never eat out). Young 'uns have historically been the bread and butter of fast food and lower end chains, and the numbers are down.
3. To go with that, consumption of alcohol (especially beer) is way down for the Gen-Z demographic as a whole. They're more into seltzer drinks and weed, which has resulted in the closure of dozens of microbreweries and pubs around the state. Runaway inflation has also played a role, turning the $5 pint into an $8 pint.
4. Inflation has especially hammered certain segments of the restaurant industry. Look at the number of high-quality barbecue joints that have closed in the last five years. They used to be able to sell a pound of smoked brisket for $10-12/pound, and now it's $30-35. My favorite BBQ joint used to have a line every day of the week for decades; now you can walk up to the counter at noon.
5. The bottom line is, support your local restaurants when you can. Life's a whole lot better with diverse and fresh local eats.

Exactly. Dr's love to tell me I'm overweight/nearly obese due to BMI. Dexa says 14% BF at that weight with for me. Wouldn't say it's under weight. 12% at 205 even feels a bit heavy.

I just want to add in a "tip" comment.

My best friend is a server at a mod / high end family owned chain resturant in the Houston area. I would guess average price is $40 to $60 per person for an evening meal plus drinks.

They get paid $2.50 per hour. They have to live off of tips. They work their ass off for 6 to 7 hours per night. It is now becoming more coommon for her to spend 2 hours taking care of a party of 4 to 8 and bill north of $300 and then get a tip of 8 dollars.

I am not a fan of the tip culture, or the system in general, but the industry is fixing to start loosing the experienced servers to other jobs if the tips don't improve.

If you are going to go out to eat at a sit down place and these servers work on tips alone, then freaking take care of them if they do a good job.

Rant over.

Why don't you tell the restaurant owners to "take care of them"? It is not my job as the patron. I come in and eat at the place, that is good enough. It is not my job to feed the waiter.

If he doesn't like the job, he should quit and do something else. If more people do that, restaurants have to pay more or go out of business. And overall restaurant prices will be higher across the board which is fine as it is upfront. Add a service charge of x%.

Guilting customers is so lame.

I've always over tipped, but I'm a former waiter. Granted, the new minimums I'm seeing populated on some POS systems and receipts are higher than my traditional over tip of 20% on top of tax. I've been passed by inflation.

One of my pet peeves are now posts/videos/articles with the premise:

"Are (insert things) dying because of (insert generation)????"

Restaurants will never die. That is, paying for food and service. It's probably the second oldest profession.

They'll change.

My wife and I started doing Home Fresh to eat better. For the two of us it's about $20/meal, comes with all the ingredients and is pretty easy to cook.

For $20 eating out I can barely get a margarita and iced tea with tip.

6 oz steak, side and a 16 oz beer/ soda for $13 or so. Wife and I get one each and split the sides.

Bro, I just made something this morning. Yes, Saturday morning.

My wife went to Whole Foods this morning and asked me if I wanted something. I said get 2lbs of Lamb. I go cheap, $9.99/lb.

I learned a lot from Youtube as far as cooking goes. But my wife is the responsible one for the cooking, I just do it as a hobby. My range isn't as large as hers but whatever I do, I do well.

I am smart with my money that is why I am "well off" (trying to be humble).

Usually the ones who boast about their over-tipping are the ones who are severely in debt. I hope you have paid all your debt off?

For some reason, in the US, over-tipping is a flex for people who go paycheck to paycheck.

In the 1950's, the average man and the average woman worked (for a wage) a combined 45 hours per week. Of which 79% of those hours were the man's. Today, the average is 59 hours, of which 53% are from men.

Consider the impact this has had on the average household's ability to have home-cooked meals. Thanks, feminism.

We have 3 kids and rarely eat out at an actual sit down restaurant, and when we do eat out, it's usually grabbing a couple of pizzas or fast food due to running around for kid's events, and even then, we go where we have coupons or some kind of incentive. We went out and had Mexican food a couple of weeks ago for my birthday and our bill was almost $90 before tip, and that was with 2 kids meals, a queso, no fajitas, and everyone drinking water (outside of the drinks that came with the kids meal). No alcohol or anything. While walking back to the van, my wife said "we won't be doing this too often." It's insane. When you start looking at the cost per person of going out vs cooking at home, spending 20 minutes whipping something up real quick looks really appetizing.

And to couple that with property taxes and homeowners insurance costs stupid expensive, I just don't know how sustainable this is. What I put away each month for taxes and insurance is almost as much as my mortgage payment on a 15 year loan.

Extravagant tips were okay when people had jobs, were wealthier and living costs were under control. But now they are not. So many people have lost their jobs, new grads can't find jobs, foreigners taking up our jobs, costs through the roof and people are still expected to pay "minimum 20%"?

Not sustainable. I find it hilarious that some restaurant people say "you can't pay a tip, you cannot eat here". Okay. When people stop visiting, let's see how long the arrogant restaurateur stays in business.

A couple of days ago, I took the kids out for burgers at a Shake Shake and paid $22. I got a deal where a $9.99 burger was free. No drinks, just 3 burgers (paid for 2) and a shared side of fries. Ordered over the app, I picked up at the counter and sat in the restaurant and threw the waste out ourselves so no tip.

$22.38 after tax.

I watched that segment and they totally nailed it. These pizza places all source their ingredients from Sysco and as a result, they all taste the same...crappy.

I live in Prosper and the only pizza place I'll go is Mama's Pizza in Plano, which is a long drive for me (but I work from home so not that big a deal). Is it more expensive, definitely, but it's 100 times better than the chains. What's ironic is they actually are a chain, just a small one. I think there are around a dozen of them left, mostly in Dallas and Fort Worth and surrounding towns.

I seriously doubt they source their ingredients from Sysco, which is why they are more expensive but actually taste good. We don't go often (which is good because it's certainly not healthy) but worth it.
