Bidenflation really did a number on restaurants. Hardly a week goes by we don't hear about another one shutting down here in C-Stat.

Quote:

Several restaurant chains are sounding the alarm about their customers' attitudes as the country's economy worsens due to inflation and slow hiring numbers.

Chipotle, Sweetgreen and Cava all purveyors of "slop bowls" have seen their stocks drop dramatically in 2025. Chipotle's stock is down about 50% for the year, while Cava has seen a 60% decline. Sweetgreen last week revealed in its earnings that same-store sales slid 9.5% and visits fell nearly 12%.

"The 25-to-35 (year old) consumer is the most under pressure, and they make up about 30% of our consumer base," Sweetgreen's CFO Jamie McConnell said.

Chipotle's CEO Scott Boatwright added the chain is not losing its consumer base to competition, but instead to grocery stores and people eating at home.

Maybe it's a good thing young people learn how to cook for themselves. It's way cheaper. Maybe they'll learn to brew their own coffee too.

It wasn't just Biden. Trump and the 116th Congress were also to blame for injecting massive amounts of cash into the economy for no good reason.

Fiscal liberalism has consequences. Say what you will about Trump, but he is not and never has been a fiscal conservative. We are paying the price for this idiocy that both sides now proudly perpetuate.

I work from home in a small rural community and spend a good number of days grabbing lunch at the local burger place or local food truck. It's literally my only interaction with real people each day. I choose to save other places.

Having said that, I can't imagine going to a place that requires you to tip a wait staff or pay $20 for a meal.

All the hot fun waitresses moved to only fans. No one wants bad service from a 42 year old single mom that smokes menthols.

Shocking

There are several factors but one of them is too many similar restaurants chasing the same consumer. Chipotle, Cava, Gusto, Suchero, Qdoba, Willy's are all slight variations of the same thing….and there's usually 2 or more located within a mile of each other.

I give Trump a slight pass on initial Covid response. It was pretty grim with much of the country shut down. Could it have been the fiscal reset we needed? Possibly, but I know when businesses were first shut down I wondered how half the companies in America would survive.

****ty service led to this continuation after the covid follies. Why give money to someone who doesn't give a **** if you eat with them or not.

Lot of eating out but at home is the only reason some restaurants are hanging on.

Add in Biden inflation and it ****ed over the industry.

Now, factor in the commercial real estate industry cycling downward due to collapsing rents and occupancy and there are less patrons in what used to be high traffic areas.

I've seen the opposite. At least, I've seen it as a consumer of some small businesses, many of which have gone out of business because their rent skyrocketed.

Are rent prices collapsing in your experience? Do you perhaps mean the number of leases?

Trump was between a rock and a hard place, politically. He would have been further eviscerated if he stood up against the CARES Act from both sides and was playing for re-election. His hands were tied, but he still signed it. The economy initially did poorly, but recovered quickly with the printed money, and he was coasting to re-election, until Zuckerbucks and the mass mail-in balloting scheme was put into motion.

I went to Chipotle recently for the first time in quite a while. Not only is the food terrible but it was $20 without a drink.

Most fast food has become too expensive. A bowl and drink is now like $14.00 Add some Guac or other side and approaching $20.

Subway, Whataburger, Burgerking, Sonic, Taco Bell, for a family of 4 with a 12 year old and a 9 year old you're easily $45. I can't stomach it anymore. And the quality continues to fall because they are desperate to keep pricing down. I got the HBCS sandwich at WB the other night because it was late and we were desperate, I really should have sent it back but it was so late and my kids were exhausted so I ate it because the stupid thing was $12. Most pathetic strips I've ever seen in my life. I could afford it if I really wanted to but I'd rather cook a much better meal for $30 and just deal with the dishes. Everyone with a brain saw this coming the second covid hit the fan and the checks started pouring out

Yesterday, I was comparing inflation of the dollar from when I was in college to today. When I factor in the cost of food, even from the grocery store, I'd be lucky to eat out a restaurant, on a date, maybe once a semester now.

Likely implied in your response, but labor quality is pretty poor and they are paying more for it.

When fast food is forced to pay $18 for a hs drop out, you get overpriced food and bad service.

The whole living wage with a job that is not supposed to be a career drove pricing beyond the consumer base. Very predictable.

Price shock and the ubiquitous risk of 1) poor service 2) poor food 3) the customer base continuum of obnoxious to violently menacing and 4) street crime or homelessness.

Used to eat subway for lunch regularly during the $5 foot long days. Hadn't been in a while so went back recently - over $20 for a basic foot long combo. Never going back again.

As an insider in the fast food/quick service industry, we are absolutely seeing less young people. Our core customer base is 50 and older. We are saved by being close to our hospital. Unless young people are with parents, we rarely see them.

I've been working to market our business to more teens and young adults (our town isn't exactly full of them), but so far have only been able to slightly turn the tide.

Coming from the logistics world to restaurants is different, but both are economic bellwethers that I don't like the direction they have been headed the last few years.

Thanks for commenting. It's an issue when Biden made everything so much more expensive. I fear it's going to hurt the poor for generations. I encourage young people to seek multiple income streams and pay attention to Dave Ramsey about not wasting their money.

Ramsey is an idiot now who fails to understand costs. His thoughts would be great now if it was 30 years ago but it isnt and he's showing his age. Basic frugality is the only concept he can share now and there's nothing special about that.

As to fast food/qsr not seeing as many young people, it is cost alone. Mom and dad cant give you 5 or 10 bucks and have it even cover a meal anymore. I've brought it up before but you can get a meal at chilis for the same price or less than eating at some fast food places. It used to be that fast was also inexpensive, fast and aaffordable. None of those tend to be true anymore

There are two things propping up GDP:

1) The AI investment roll out and
2) People with significant amounts of money invested spending in the economy.

Middle class spending has slowed down. Almost all consumer spending growth over the last year has been from higher income or highly invested people. Think retiring boomers with large 401k balances. They've been able to do that because the stock market is up big this year, largely as a result of point 1. The vast majority of S&P growth has been from 7 stocks, all in tech, all related to AI. As the AI bubble draws back or even bursts, these high investment spenders are going to slow down as the market slows and their investment balances decline.

That's how you get GDP flat.
