This man is a genius at running businesses but he sucks at predicting the future.
What he says is that in 20 years, AI will do all jobs so people can do other things that they want to do.
How will they pay for sheet? The Government, through a universal income system.

But then, does everyone get paid the same? What about smart capable ones versus the lazy bums? All the same? Everyone drives a Lambo??

Musk forgets basic psychology about human emotions. We have greed, selfishness, envy. We are not happy with just having a good life, we want something better than what our neighbor has.

So this idea is dumb and will never happen regardless of how smart AI gets.

But he is a CEO after all, which is another name for "charlatan". He needs to float such ideas to get the morons and idiots in line while he gets rich himself.

That is why, Fellow Ags, become investors. We may hate on the evil corporations but we cannot beat them. If you can't beat em, join em. When they make money, you make money too. Why bother working?

Forget the four-day workweek, Elon Musk predicts you won't have to work at all in 'less than 20 years'

Gen Z graduates are searching for any signs that AI won't be able to swipe their entry-level roles right out of college. But Elon Musk anticipates a very different future for those young hopefuls: By the time they're in their forties, they won't have to work at all.

"In less than 20 yearsbut maybe even as little as 10 or 15 yearsthe advancements in AI and robotics will bring us to the point where working is optional," Musk said yesterday on an episode of the People by WTF] podcast.

Technologies such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini have already alleviated the burden of some time-consuming work, such as data cleaning, summarization, and other administrative tasks. By 2029, one survey last year found that AI will save workers up to 12 hours per week.

The podcast host, Nikhil Kamath, noted that parts of the world are already seeing a shift to shorter workweeks as a result. But forget the four-day workweek. As AI continues to boost productivity gains, Musk insisted that jobs will become more of a personal choice, like a hobby.

Musk doubles down on his vision that work will be optional in the future
It's not the first time the SpaceX founder and richest person in the world, worth $450 billion, has said that workers could inevitably choose whether they want to work or not. Just a couple of weeks ago at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, D.C, Musk made the comparison of working to having an at-home garden.

Yesterday, he echoed the same sentiment. "You can grow your own vegetables in your garden or you could go to the store and buy vegetables," the billionaire tech mogul explained. "It's much harder to grow your own vegetables. But some people like to grow their vegetables, which is fine. But it'll be optional, in that way, is my prediction."

Without needing to go into an office, Musk added that living near oneor out in the countrysidewill be completely optional too. "It won't be the case that you have to be in a city for a job," Musk said, adding that a Universal High Income will pay for people's living expenses and anything else they can think of.

"If you can think of it, you can have it, will be the future," Musk added.

Amazing salesmanship. I can have anything I want... why wasn't I born 30 years later?

I saw this a while back. I just cannot see any possible path in the future where this would work out. I realize I don't have billions of dollars, but this does not look like a viable future.

So I can live in a 4000 sqft house on the ocean in Malibu and spend Christmas at my penthouse on Central Park South in NYC?

Travel first class all over the world? Attend the Kentucky derby in Matt Winns annually? Sit in the Legacy Club for every home game at Kyle?

Explain how that will be possible. And if it is not, why wouldn't I want to continue working?

Yeah, every advancement has been touted as saving us time and being more efficient.
Instead what's happened is that people end up working even more hours especially if you don't work for yourself.

There has not been one single advancement that has resulted in folks working less.

I know...I try to block it out, but all i feel is a sense of impending doom for just about all of society...or anyone who is not completely off the grid and self sufficient.

Have to remind myself that Christ is King, mankind has endured unimaginable hardship before and survived, and all I can do is teach my little one that, and try to replicate my 80's/90's upbringing as best I can.

I'm not working 18 hour at the coal mine 6 days a week to live on a dirt floor, eating pig slop.

I sit behind a computer for 40-50 hrs a week and go home and go out to eat or drink my dinner and sleep in a $10000 bed.

we're already most of the way there. the concept of retirement functionally didn't exist for all of human history until very recently.

as usual though expect musk will be way off with this prediction, and "no one will have to work again" is still far off in the future

We've been turned into constant beta testers for companies and government systems...and the feedback isnt being used to fix the systems...They've trained us to accept and participate in bad/inefficient systems

I want back pay for all the labor stolen from me for dealing with customer service automated voice systems, sitting on hold, talking to customer service people who can only read a script and dont have a command of English - all because problems created by their own crappy processes.

This **** won't end with AI - it'll probably get worse.

It always seemed to me that people who don't have to work often live rather pointless lives.

You might say that they exist rather than living.

Think about it.

If you can go fishing every day, then it becomes one of "What did you do yesterday? Fishing", "What are you doing today? Fishing", and "What are you going to do tomorrow? Fishing".

If you get to go fishing every day, then why bother going fishing?
