Beginning in 2014, prestige industries decided they urgently needed to diversify. They didn’t purge established Boomers. Instead, they did everything possible to avoid hiring white millennial men.

This is the story of a generation derailed by DEI. https://t.co/kUfmpHfaMH

Here are just some of the staggering stats in the article. There are a lot more than this and it's getting worse. The DEI programs didn't go away, they have just rebranded.

The doors seemed to close everywhere and all at once. In 2011, the year I moved to Los Angeles, white men were 48 percent of lower-level TV writers; by 2024, they accounted for just 11.9 percent. The Atlantic's editorial staff went from 53 percent male and 89 percent white in 2013 to 36 percent male and 66 percent white in 2024. White men fell from 39 percent of tenure-track positions in the humanities at Harvard in 2014 to 18 percent in 2023.

These weren't empty slogans, either. In 2021, new hires at Cond Nast were just 25 percent male and 49 percent white; at the California Times, parent company of The Los Angeles Times and The San Diego Union-Tribune, they were just 39 percent male and 31 percent white. That year ProPublica hired 66 percent women and 58 percent people of color; at NPR, 78 percent of new hires were people of color.

White men may still be 55 percent of Harvard's Arts & Sciences faculty (down from 63 percent a decade ago), but this is a legacy of Boomer and Gen-X employment patterns. For tenure-track positionsthe pipeline for future facultywhite men have gone from 49 percent in 2014 to 27 percent in 2024 (in the humanities, they've gone from 39 percent to 21 percent).
This story has exploded on X. I have seen thousands of stories about this article from people across virtually every single industry about systematic discrimination and door shutting. I have a few of my own.
The article is about a number of liberal arts fields and even has some leftist white men who got shut out, but the story doesn't end there. Virtually every white man under the age of 45 has experienced this in their career. If you're under the age of 30, this is your reality now.
This forum ignores the issue because few of the Gen X and Boomers were affected by this. They were high enough that they were already past the newly constructed barriers to entry.
Even for those of us who are successful, we all fear losing our jobs because we know it's almost certainly over if that happens. We can't leave our jobs because everything is now broken where the jobs either don't exist or they have no intention of hiring a white man.
I experienced all of this firsthand, having entered graduate school in 2013. By 2020, I watched non-white colleagues with CVs a tiny fraction as strong as mine absolutely swamped with interview requests and job offers, while I couldn't even secure a preliminary phone interview.… https://t.co/qv89SyrDsz
