We had a conservative doctor who apologized for having to ask the questions. She outright refused to ask the question about firearms.

Are they going to charge more for people who are more financially secure than those who check yes?

My wife is a nurse case manager for a major insurance company. She has to ask customers these kinds of questions every day. As another poster said, they refer to this as Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). The thinking being that if you cannot pay your bills you are less likely to take care of your health. The insurers goal is to keep their customers out hospitals and ERs.

No comment here on whether it's a good thing or bad thing; but it's a thing, and in this case it's designed to save the insurance company money.

When answering questions on forms at the doctors office, remember one thing and it applies to every stinking question they ask....

Eventually, the .gov will get control of the health system and every question you answer goes to a "code" for it. These codes, will be fed into a computer "system" that will profile you for things like:

The ability to purchase and own a firearm.

Your health history in regards to your actions regarding alcohol and tobacco (nicotine) intake, that could put you at the end of a list for care, etc.

The questions can seem benign, but even the simplest question about alcohol intake goes into a "score" that gets a code and......

So, unless you are in a very specific medical state that you would want to fully disclose this situation ( and you may be, and should), just know you don't have to answer. Not saying one should lie, but you don't have to answer these questions.

These have been around for a long time. I have never filled them out. You shouldn't either.

I got asked these questions with a recent surgery here in Texas. I got asked the same questions ahead of every post op follow up appointment with my doctor.

Hospitals and doctor's offices have connections to resources for people who (for example) can't afford their brand name prescription that the doctor will insist on prescribing even though it's only 3% better than the generic it replaced.

Readmission to a hospital after discharge affects Medicare reimbursement. One of the major reasons they ask these questions in hospitals is to flag their chart for the social worker to help plan outside resources to make sure they are able to better take care of themselves and to keep them out of the ER.

In all seriousness though, the questions are not meant to be some sort of socialist experiment. Is more about holistic views of the patient and getting a better idea of how to best help them be healthy.

Just like the one time S&W asked me if I owned any guns, my response is going to be "none of your business."

Thankfully I've never had a doctor or nurse ask me anything like that again. The mental heath questions like "do you feel safe in your home" annoy me. I always reply, "if I didn't, I wouldn't live there."

I just had a surgery last month and they will ask you similar questions in pre-op so get ready for it. I was asked if I felt safe at home while I was lying there waiting on anesthesia to come and knock me out. I made a point to jerk my head over at my wife sitting next to me and look at her with exaggerated fear.

We all laughed.

Granted, I might be getting asked all of these questions because all of this happening at Christus which is a Catholic health system.

This is because a doctor's visit is more expensive than a mortgage payment (or it will be soon!).

At first I was wondering why Smith & Wesson would be asking you that...

Sometimes you are required to ask stupid questions. I was once asked if there was any chance that I could be pregnant before I got a flu vax. My 50yo bald unshaven self quipped something about "being a carrier" for pregnancy which DID NOT amuse the Aunt Esther lookalike nurse, who only repeated the question in a most decidedly hateful manner.

I want to know why I have to fill out the same forms every time and then answer from the angry staff, "Has your insurance changed since your last visit? Has anything changed since your last visit?" That would be in the forms, dumbass. And, no telling what kind of hell I would have to go through if I didn't tell you my insurance changed since the last time when I get billed by you because the insurance rejected payment.

Unfortunately, many of the "social determinants of health" (SDOH) contribute to the rising number of people using the emergency room (ER) instead of visiting their primary care doctors or urgent care facilities.
This is a real problem for those of us in the ER.
I took care of probably no less than five people today who were only there today for their SDOH related issues, and you know they probably didn't pay for it.

I dont ask about firearms in Texas. I assume they have firearms and just ask them to keep them secured when kids get to walking.
