Mad Men is actually a very good show.
But I agree with you. I'm sure there's been commercials over time that have made me want to try something but in general it's not going to completely change my attitude on whether I'm going to drink or eat or buy something. I hate coconut and sweet potatoes and no matter of any kind of commercial would ever get me to try them. Doesn't mean I couldn't laugh at it though if they ever had one.
Because when we were growing up, you couldn't fast forward through commercials so unless you went to the bathroom or just didn't pay attention, they were there. I can still sing the jingles to many, many commercials to this day.
A few months ago we were at my brother's house and my niece and nephew who are in their mid to late 20s were there and I started singing the Fig Newton song from the commercial (remember the dancing fig Newton) and they were laughing about it and then I started singing other commercial jingles that were popular, and my sister-in-law and brother were just chiming in and they both looked at this like how in the world do you guys know and remember all these? I'm like because we heard them all the time.
On a tangent note about 25 years ago, I saw Barry Manilow in concert in Houston at the Cynthia Woods pavilion and I was not aware of how many famous commercial jingles that he wrote. He sang a lot of them and it was like wow I knew every single one of these.
notably "I am stuck on Band-Aid, 'cause Band-Aid's stuck on me!" for Band-Aid, "Like a Good Neighbor" for State Farm, and "You Deserve a Break Today" for McDonald's**, alongside others for Stridex, KFC, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, and Dodge. He also wrote the "Toilet Bowl Blues" for Green Bowlene cleaner.
