GPS, I would guess
Planes fly pretty often without GPS or with scrambled GPS, I reckon whatever tech they have does more than screw up some coordinates.

Dude, get off your phone. You're going to cause a crash!

IRAN
CHINA
CUBA
Venezuela
The FAA and DOW acted swiftly to address a cartel drone incursion.

The threat has been neutralized, and there is no danger to commercial travel in the region.
The restrictions have been lifted and normal flights are resuming. https://t.co/xQA1cMy7l0

This deal is odd, the "cartels" have been flying drones across the border for years, in prolly lots of locations. BP friends have shared videos withe me of agents shooting Mex drones down and have also relayed how they track them via the Aerostat and radar coverage.
There have been helicopters, small planes, and years back basically kamikazi crop dusters that would cross the border and drop dope or souls.
And some of that has been close to other comercial airports. This is just a weird deal to me, save for someone flying drones into and very close to the airport.
Just because something bad has been happening for a long time doesn't mean it's weird or odd that somebody is finally doing something about it. It is odder to me that past administrations cared nothing about the activity.

And now we have justification to attack cartels.
Hold onto your butts.
It's been justified. They are terrorist organizations.
The El Paso airspace closure was news to White House -- Trump had not been made aware it was coming, sources told me. The grounding touched off a scramble among law enforcement agencies to figure out what prompted the security message in the so-called NOTAM. The situation was…

Hearing the same. FAA reopened the air space after talking to officials at Fort Bliss (which is in El Paso), a US official tells me. https://t.co/thMobka11v

It now appears that this may have simply been a communications disconnect between the FAA and counter-drone training/ops being conducted by the Army at nearby Ft Bliss.

Yeah, who knows what the final story will be, but at least initially, a communications disconnect between the FAA and the Army conducting drone/counter-drone ops at nearby Ft Bliss sounds more credible to me than does a sudden surge of clandestine cartel drone flights into the well-monitored airspace over a major city and military base.

Rumor now is FAA fighting with DoD over airspace, and maybe some DoD experiment or project regarding GPS blackout areas

Update to the "Drones" article I linked just above:
"CBS News and CNN have both now reported that a breakdown in coordination between the U.S. military and the FAA over the employment of a counter-drone system armed with a laser directed energy weapon contributed to the imposition of the flight restrictions around El Paso.
"Meetings were scheduled over safety impacts, but Pentagon officials wanted to test the technology sooner," according to CBS News, citing multiple unnamed sources. "Airlines were also aware of the apparent impasse between the FAA and Pentagon officials over the issue because the Pentagon has been using Fort Bliss for anti-cartel drone operations without sharing information with the FAA."
If so, that's unprofessional to say the least.

fort Bliss is a Large Missile range and has white sands next to it.
Fort Bliss is not next to White Sands.
I did the Bataan Death March Marathon back in 2008 at White Sands
the missile base is in New Mexico 44 miles from El Paso airport
