My point remains that "I am paying more" cannot be a reason to remove tariffs. The job of the government is to do what is collectively right for the citizens long term. We too often think short term thinking we are infallible.

Of course that can be a reason for removing tariffs. The government is supposed to work for us, not the other way around. We don't elect our leaders and then just salute them when they implement their policies if their policies hurt us. You just watch the upcoming midterms... there's going to be blowback on the party in power because enough people believe they're not better off since the last election.

I don't necessarily believe that. I appreciate the efforts to minimize taxes and reduce regulations, but I can clearly see how some people are struggling and will demand that the government address their concerns. That is Politics 101.

The Govt is working for us. For the long term, not short term. You want short term benefits with long term harm. The Govt is okay with short term discomfort for long term prosperity. Americans have become too short term minded. Long term cultures like China and India know this and have gamed it. All they have to do is wave billions of dollars in front of our noses and we will sell them anything they want. Everyone knows this.

I agree Trump will lose the midterm. Because Americans want cheap prices AND jobs. Not possible. If you want jobs (long term thing) you have to sacrifice prices (short term thing). You cannot have both.

I don't want the government picking winners and losers.

Free markets baby! The American way. It's why our economy is the envy of the world.

I want the freedom to make those assessments and decisions myself instead of a politician trying to decide what's best for me. I will own the consequences of my decisions and don't expect the government to bail me out. I also don't want them to punish me for my success.

Sometimes governments have to pick winners and losers. They have always done it in the past, are doing it now and will do it in the future.

There is no evidence to show that if the government just went away, things will be perfect. Never. It's just some crack that the conservatives share with one another to feel good and grumble about things.

There never were free markets, not right now and never will be in the future. FM is a theoretical concept which sounds good but the pre-reqs to achieve it can never be met in practice.

If someone says they want low prices NOW then it is a short term benefit. You can get low prices, but think what you are giving up in the bargain. Short prices have to come from someone's pocket. That eventually comes from YOUR pocket in a different way. The way usually is you will lose your job or your kid will not get a job or end up doing HVAC because you hankered for low prices.

Note: By "you", I don't mean you. I mean us in general.

Good in theory. Never will happen in practice.

Much like "My religion will bring peace in the world..... if only implemented correctly".

Only losers want the government to pick winners and losers.

Fortunately, our American way of life largely rejects that, and we have the freest markets in the world, a key reason for our economic vitality.

But people who are afraid of competition will continue clamoring for "Daddy Government" to take care of them. I am thankful for the courageous politicians who reject that and instead embrace free markets.
