Lots of memories here. Add drinking from the water hose, bottle rockets from a coke bottle, Daisy BB guns, water balloon fights and losing teeth with a string and a doorknob. Classic Americana.

My grandfather gave my brother and I a hunting knife with an 8" blade when we were 10 & 12 yo. I was in the ER getting stitches within 6 months time and nobody even discussed taking them away from us.

Lesson learned!

Great collection, Rocky! (Tell me I'm not the only one that chased the mosquito fog truck on my bicycle....)

edit to add: OR..... shined up silver coins with the mercury from a broken thermometer. Silly putty on the comics, anyone?

We lived too far out of town to get a mosquito fogger, but we used to ride our bikes over to the cotton field to watch the crop dusters spraying whatever chemicals. Typically upwind of us. Sometimes close enough to get us coughing. Those guys were crazy with their flying.

ETA - that cotton field is now the South Plains Mall in Lubbock, if anyone is familiar with the area

Thanks a ton Rocky. This made me feel old but I laughed a lot while I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. There will be a record number of stolen memes sent to my kids, nieces and nephews.

Yep.

Possibly...not as a knock on previous episodes....but possibly the best Sunday posting by Rocky ever.

My dad had that very ashtray!!!! :-)

I was going to say 'I think that kid is me'
Except my grandparents always had the bean bag ashtray so you could take it from the house into the car and set it in the dashboard without it sliding off.
So I guess that kid was a doppleganger

Every car I've driven with a foot-operated parking brake was an automatic, and every car I've driven with a manual transmission had a hand-operated parking brake in the center console. Never more than three pedals.

Bench seats meant foot brake. Common in trucks and vans with three on the tree manual transmissions.

I was in the gym waiting for the school bus as older kids were climbing the rope. One kid fell from the top and ended up with a compound fracture of an arm.
Once the boy was moved and cleaned the blood the others started climbing again.

People need to have more children for that to happen.

When I was a Catholic kid in the 60s, our parish had a directory of members with family pictures. Really had to get dressed up and go to a photographer for that photo.

My family had three kids. But many had five to seven kids, even more. Of course back then the only Catholic Church approved method of birth control was Rhythm Method. Refrain from sex when the wife was ovulating if wanted to avoid pregnancy. Spectacular failure rate for a lot of reasons.

I don't believe this story. No way they waited for the blood to be cleaned up before resuming.

It's so funny as yesterday we were with some friend about 18 years younger than me and someone brought up hot slides. We were chuckling about it and talking about how you would lean back with your legs up so your legs didn't touch the slide. We all remembered that and the merry go round thing ( or whatever it's called) we would spin around and to those pushing, we'd say faster, faster even though we could hardly hold on sometimes. I caught lightning bugs for a scientific lab and every night it was a family affair. I got a penny a bug. We put them in Baggies and froze them. I used to walk several blocks to school. There were no seat belts on busses and many people didn't have seat belts or didn't wear them. We used to go to the local store for "penny candy". Please don't squeeze the Charmin! I also remember watching Saturday morning cartoons on the 3 networks we had (plus local station) as there was no cable. Wizard or OZ and Cinderella were on once a year.
Skipping down memory lane, thanks Rocky!
