I think it is outdated, unnecessary, and just political theater from both sides.

In what manner?
The current form as the President addressing a special joint session of Congress?

Because the Constitution says clearly, in plain language, the President shall give periodic update to the State of the Union.

So I'm answer to your question, simply put...

No.

Edit... Typos

It's required by the Constitution under Article II, Section 3, Clause 1.

That said, until Wilson started doing it in person, most Presidents simply sent in a written report to Congress.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Make it written again. Drop the kabuki act. I watch because of the theater of it all but it has turned more into a media event than a Constitutional requirement.

One Caveat: White House will absolutely have to release the full written report publicly before giving it to Congress so the cherry picking from a written statement will be lessened.

The entire thing is childish and idiotic, and has been for decades.

Washington sent an annual letter to Congress to fulfill the constitutional requirement. If it was sufficient for Washington, it is more than sufficient for now. There is zero need for the political kabuki theater stupidity that the State of the Union is now.

It doesn't matter one way or another to me. I haven't wasted time watching for a very long time. If there is anything I want get up to speed on, I get the transcript and it takes 5 minutes or less to read.

Nah. Reagan was the best to ever do it. It's been a **** show these past 15-20 years though, I will give you that.

Nope. Would prefer more. Four times a year. Just like quarterly reporting directly to the American people who have short memories.

I have always hated the SotU. There is no reason for it anymore. It's basically a political rally with all of the political elite of both sides there to either cheer or jeer at it. There is no real information provided that isn't already available through 50 other outlets.

As with most things Wilson/Carter did, it was a mistake. As Pelosi made it clear Democrats would never be civil again if an American president was speaking, it's obvious the joint session should be abandoned.

A Trump address without the shouting/theatrics of the communists, from the Oval Office would be much more effective imho, even though a simple letter would suffice.

Probably the most famous shouting/theatrics came from a Republican, Joe Wilson yelling at Obama.

Stating "You lie" (and he was correct, about Obama's claim regarding healthcare coverage for illegal immigrants fwiw, and he was then apologetic about it and given a reprimand by the House) was incredibly mild compared to the scenes Dems have created, or other petty acts such as refusing to stand for child cancer survivors etc.

Democrats hate Americans and want us dead, something they today consistently make clear during their state of the union performances, which is perhaps an argument it should continue unchanged.

The in-person SoTU has run its course. It's turned into a prime time speech with the president using the bully pulpit. The reactions from the congresscritters present is beginning to make the Prime Minister's Questions look tame. I'm all for sending a letter to Congress and being done with it.
