Before "The Onion" went off the rails leftist, I thought they missed an opportunity to present an annual satirical "State of the Onion" program at the same time as the State of the Union address.
People of integrity expect to be believed, when they're not, they let time prove them right.

I'd be ok if it went away. Never watched more than 5 minutes of any political presentation or speech in the past 30 years.

Needs to be a direct address to the nation. One party clapping at the end of every sentence while the other refuses to clap for anything (even if it is almost word-for-word what their guy said when he was president) just showcases how hopelessly divided we are as a country (and makes a 10-minute speech take over an hour).

I think it is outdated, unnecessary, and just political theater from both sides.

It's required by the Constitution under Article II, Section 3, Clause 1.

That said, until Wilson started doing it in person, most Presidents simply sent in a written report to Congress.

As with most things Wilson/Carter did, it was a mistake. As Pelosi made it clear Democrats would never be civil again if an American president was speaking, it's obvious the joint session should be abandoned.

A Trump address without the shouting/theatrics of the communists, from the Oval Office would be much more effective imho, even though a simple letter would suffice.

Probably the most famous shouting/theatrics came from a Republican, Joe Wilson yelling at Obama.

Pelosi, tearing up Trump's written speech - in the most egregious act of political theatre I can remember - is huffing, puffing, and preening on Line 2.

Washington and Adams did speaking addresses the first 2 admins...

That set the original precedent. Then TJ said "Nah. I'm not doing ANYTHING like that Adams dude" and the precedent stopped...

I'd be ok if Democrats went away and an established "creed of living" was made in the US, along with universal established language to ****ing communicate no matter what the trade being sought.

Want a study done? Want changes to education, tax law, and allowances? Be sure you are paying for it and NOT out of taxpayer money.

I SHOULD NOT be obligated to pay for schools, welfare, or foreign aid.

Only the services I need. Police, fire department, and first responders.

Oh and if I don't use those in any given year? Not paying.

I have no kids and am self sufficient. My employers pay unemployment taxes. So WTF should I be expected to pay? Modify the 1040 tax form.

In what manner?
The current form as the President addressing a special joint session of Congress?

Because the Constitution says clearly, in plain language, the President shall give periodic update to the State of the Union.

So I'm answer to your question, simply put...

No.

Edit... Typos
It could also just be a memo instead of theater, though.

It can't be.

The nation is not the intended (and as such, required) audience.

The fact that the practice was reinstated by the odious Woodrow Wilson is frankly the best reason to stop it.

I just think it should be a letter to congress which the president reads for the cameras from the Oval Office. It's unwatchable 90 percent of the time. Obama's were all an hour or longer. Ike's were only 30 minutes, which should be something like a cap for a speech one hopes people will listen to.

I'd also favor Jefferson's approach, as to tradition;
Quote:

President Thomas Jefferson changed the procedure followed by his predecessors with his first annual message (December 8, 1801). Instead of delivering an in-person speech, his private secretary delivered copies of the message to both chambers of Congress, to be read by clerks in the House and Senate. President Jefferson unfavorably likened the oral delivery of the message to the British monarch's "speech from the throne," and felt it unsuitable to a republic.

Fittingly, idiot bigot hateful worst-POTUS of all time Jimmy Carter had the most to say in one of his:
Quote:

President Jimmy Carter's 1981 message was the longest written message to date, at 33,667 words. President Bill Clinton's 1995 address was the longest in-person speech, at 9,190 words.

Slick Willie actually had some decent speech writers, fwiw.

The Constitution says it will be done, and why not use technology George Washington didn't have so the electorate can see and hear it? There is, however, no Constitutional requirement for the opposing party to get some sort of "equal time" for rebuttal. Hell, it's a governor giving it this time.

So an email or memo would work just as fine today.

Works for me, though those loving them cream/rage watching would have to find something else to get their fill for those missing couple of hours.
