Be glad you don't live in Mississippi.

One of those states where state government controls the distribution of all alcohol. What could go wrong...?

Well, 3 months ago the state shut down all distribution for a "two-week" inventory period. No distribution since.

Liquor stores have closed. Restaurants are dry. 174,000 CASES are sitting in a warehouse and no one has the gumption to get them to buyers.

Needless to say, this would not be happening if the distributor's jobs depended on doing getting stuff out the door. But they don't. They work for the state.

Mississippi has so many stupid problems. Just finished a year long project in Jackson - so happy to be done. It's the murder capital of the US (per capita) and feels 100% like it. First time in 30 year career I didn't venture out to explore the town I was in.

For alcohol - they have the dumbest laws. They can sell beer and wine in grocery stores, but only at a proof that no beer and wine is at. End up with about 10 bottles of some no-name brand of wine that will conform to those standards. Really stupid stuff.

Weird. Idaho runs the liquor stores and while it limits some of our options, nothing like this occurs. That said, it is pretty annoying that they're the only supplier of liquor accessible to residents, but honestly it really doesnt impact anything for either drunkards or occasional enthusiasts of liquid courage.

I do miss access to Blantons though...

Good thing that Oregon is right next door, so if I ever really cared about access to different selections id just swing by one of their options while picking up my gummies.

In Arkansas, one can only buy alcohol at a State run store, this includes beer. Ice houses and grocery stores are not allowed to sell beer.

When I moved to Arizona 3 years ago I was happy to find out you can buy beer, wine and liquor at the grocery store, pharmacy and hardware store. The first time I was getting gasoline at Circle K there were people walking up to the cashier and ordering shots. This is how you do it. We also have drivers license stores so you don't have to deal with the DMV for your license or registration.

Dumb question but do you know if they get registered to vote as well in those?

Ok. Raise of hands. Who here actually read the article?

The state didn't shut it down. The private company contacted to run the facility several years ago did. They also used the shut down to implement a new computer system that turned out to be incompatible with the states old equipment.

Rather than roll back, they ripped out the conveyor belts and started processing statewide orders BY HAND.

Yes. I got my DL and Arizona plates the week I moved and they registered me to vote. Having all this privatized is a beautiful thing. I was out the door in 20 minutes instead of the lines I was used to at Texas DMV.

There is a problem with a state government controlling something that they don't actually control because they outsource every service to a private company.

I grew up outside Jackson and visited family in Macon my entire life. It's infuriating how that state has changed in 40 years. I won't go into details but there's a demographic bringing down that state.

You sure about that? I lived in a wet county in Eastern Arkansas and knew several people in town that OWNED liquor stores and I distinctly remember Kroger selling beer.

Never smoked it and was 47 yrs old before I ever even saw it, physically, in person.

I don't like being out of control, so don't drink or do drugs but am constantly in pain, thusly. :-(

Mississippi has almost no middle class, according to daughter who was stationed there for six years. Extremely rich or extremely poor, very little middle

Strangely enough, their education system has gone back to basics in reading, and now ranks very high. Who knew?

Add me to the list of never drank, never smoked, never used illegal drugs.

Now I'm an old fart, spend a lot of time in doctor's offices, and they all wondered how I got in this bad a shape without vices
