What an interesting moment in time.

England will not be able to retake the Falkland unless they get real nasty about it. Even then that would take time. Remember all those foreigners that are now living and are serving in politics in the UK do not care about the Falklands.

If England was so keen on giving away a strategic Diego Garcia, they may want to trade for a few hundred dentists in exchange for the island.

Argentina seems to be more of a better potential ally and future partner than the UK....

When Margret Thatcher was prime minister, I was for England in the first Falklands war. But now I'm for Argentina and Javier Milei all the way! Argentina is capitalist now and they are for the USA. Britain is more socialist and we all know what they did during the Iran war. Frankly, I expect Britain, France, Spain and Germany to be part of a Muslim caliphate one day.

Lots of UK folks losing their minds that we have said we are neutral on the Falklands because apparently it is our duty as allies to scream at Argentina and tell them to back off. We should probably send our ships down there as well. It's really showing the disconnect with the US and Europe. Europe and the UK really don't understand that most Americans don't really care about them and the idea that we need to prop up their former empires for them when they want and turn a blind eye when they screw us over. They insist on us treating them as equals or really subservient to them because they can combine their little countries together and feel like they are more than they are.

The reality is we ask very little of Europe for what we provide and they weren't there for us when we asked. Denying us the use of their airspace was deeply insulting and they blow it off like it was no big deal. When you won't let us use your airspace or the bases we have in your country as we wish we aren't going to keep those bases there or at least in the size and scope we have had them. Screwing around with Diego Garcia was incredibly stupid as well. Europe is in for a lot of humbling in the coming years. Outside of ASML they don't even have much in the way of tech that's very important anymore as they have are being left in the dust with AI. We are also in the process of taking London's Finance and Insurance business from them.

Falklands is just the latest example of how the "Special Relationship" is changing and it isn't going to end well for them if they don't wake up to reality. Our incentive to help Europe keep their territories (esp in the Western Hemisphere) is basically nonexistent unless we get something in return. Bretton Woods is over as is the Cold War.

Well said Aggie93!

Been away from my phone this week and haven't had to chance to keep up with everything. From what I have read they found an oil deposit off of the islands and Milei wants US help. But the UK is hindering things (not sure how or why) and will not let Argentina go after the oil.

Seems there is a shift for the US to have a hand in as many O&G countries to put pressure on China. The UK is no longer an ally and hindering China from natural resources is a goal for Trump.

The Falkland Islands are not the property of Argentina.

Yet...

the people that live there don't want to be under Argentina's control. and i don't blame them, it would materially worsen their lives and economics.

Argentina of course always has believed Malvinas is still theirs.

Where have you seen that? The truth is they've had to repeatedly cancel their squid seasons due to the Chinese over-fishing of the area which the UK is powerless/feckless to do anything about.

There are very few actual islanders and they'd be well served if their sovereign power helped explore the oil/gas around the island which could provide substantial wealth. If Argentina/Chile etc. want to cast aside the imperial yolk we should support our fellow (south) Americans.

If Argentina does move to take it after the brits refuse to negotiate, I hope we just stay out of it as the hilarity of the status of the royal navy would be exposed yet again. The brits keep all of 4 typhoon jets (and a tanker) on the island.

They voted 1513-3 in 2013 that they wanted to remain a UK overseas territory. I don't think they're concerned with "imperial yolk"

Argentina themselves also has done nothing against illegal Chinese fishing of their seas. so why would they be able to protect those islands?

I'd forgotten about that, LOL. Over a license plate. Argentinians really take that whole island so seriously. 'Merry Xmas to everyone, except the Tierra Del Fuego people of Argentina. You lot can sod off.'

I'd favor allowing the 'British' living there to re-migrate to elsewhere in the empire. The UK has open borders for everyone else so it shouldn't be an issue, and the subjects should get 'free healthcare' anyway of course. Only 3600 live there I think.

Guess the UK should have more than 4 functioning ships to maintain control of a far away island, eh?

Plus beware of asking Trump to gain and maintain any mineral interests in territories of the islands. Argentina would make Trump a better offer.

The Uk is dead. They don't know it yet but they' destroyed themselves from within. They are no longer a world power.

Also, libs should be backing Argentina, if they are the same ones saying the US is "stolen" land. Same logic applies.

Sort of how we are with Canada and Greenland, and similarly it's time to take what's ours from the European colonialist.

And you think their life gets worse moving from tea, crumpets and mushy peas to malbec, steak and cheesy bread? Really?

Do the NHS extend their excellent service all the way to the Falklands?

Time to vandalize the English Tower in Buenos Aires again. When I was there 20 years ago, they were letting more of the graffiti remain, looks like their cleaned it up over time.

We will know the Argentines are serious when they start tagging the tower again with "Starmer es la puta!"…

Sure, never been. Care to enlighten?

Btw, I have been, had that country as part of my area of responsibility for several years, have folks I am friends with and worked with who are from there or lived there, and generally just clueless about the place.

Instead of saying I don't have a clue, do you care to counter or rebuke any of my observations?

So Milei hasn't reduced trade with China to, by most estimates, less than 10% of Argentinas GDP? And Argentina imports Chinese electronics whilst Argentina sends soy and beef and other agricultural commodities. So who is feeding who?

Hell, the much lambasted IS currency swap deal from last year was done to replace, compete with a China facility of the same size.

I don't think it's me that's clueless about Argentina…

Milei has reduced it from 200+% to 20-30%. Inflation has long been a way of life in S America and whilst a challenge does not preclude one from enjoying steak and wine.

A few hundred people claiming allegiance to the Brits so they can continue counting penguins and sipping tea with milk does not invalidate Argentinas claim that it should control islands off its coast.

I mean, why not?

Pretty dumb what we have done with Cuba.

The day the Soviet Union fell we should have annexed Cuba.

Or better yet just return to making them colonies, protectorates.

But you do not hand them to the Russians, Chinese and Iranians like we have done for decades now.
