Is it just my faded memory, or did they not play "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" at the end of every Thursday night at the Hall of Shame?

It was played every Thursday night, but as I remember the final song of the night was "Good night, Irene."

Here.

Goodnight Irene closed out the Chicken...

"You Never Even Called Me by My Name" was earlier. Pre-midnight as I recall....

When my son was 10 we lived in San Antonio and came back to CS for a regional. During the break between Saturday games we went to The Chicken for a burger and the moment we stepped onto the back porch You Never Even Call Me By My Name came on. The place wasn't packed on a Saturday afternoon in late May but everyone there started signing and my son joined in. The people that were there loved watching this 10 year old singing the last lines at the top of his lungs. Good times.

RIP, David. Hope you hear your name.

In the 80s they would play those at Bonfire stack. Don't remember much about them except the song "I want to Fxxx the Sxxx out of you"

It wasn't played as the last song but it was definitely requested and all the BQs would gather around and do a little line dance kick routine and end with a hump it.

Still gets played at wedding receptions for Aggie Bandsmen.

No line dancing (unless you wanted to call The Schottische at the end of Cotton Eyed Joe a line dance) was, mercifully, done at the Hall of Shame (or anywhere) in the era I'm talking about. I would hate to have witnessed what you're describing
I said line. Really more of a circle.

But yeah, in that era, line dancing wasn't a thing in Texas. I was horrified when I went to a country bar in Louisville, KY when I was a 2LT at Fort Knox. All they did was line dancing. Like the "Achy Breaky" line.

It's been played at a vast majority of all the Aggie wedding receptions that I've ever attended.

It should be the singalong in Kyle Field.

RIP my redneck brother.

Around the time of Napster there were several highly racist songs that were attributed to him, but were not actually him at all. I'm curious which songs you were thinking were his.

People confuse him with Johnny Rebel. An actual racist song writer.

There was an "underground" or "bootleg' album that was produced outside the normal record companies. It was advertised in the back of sketchy magazines in the 1970s. A lot of pretty offensive lyrics that were popular with people like bikers and white supremacists.

Coe always claimed the album was satire. I am sure everyone who has listened to it has their own take on it. Raunchy is the first word that came to my mind.

I was a naive country kid….only listened to old country in the 80s. Had a tape of DAC….well, I thought I was in the cool crowd on the bus one day when the wild bunch said they were gonna play DAC….i was like…they will like me …"I listen to David Allan also"….this is awesome…..wondering why they were so secretive…

Oh my gosh, the perverted filthy trash coming out of that jam box was indescribable to me….it was my first exposure to that side of him….wow

Yeah I saw that discography looking him up today. Had no idea about those. Managed to find one of the songs on Odysee. It is as bad as the title sounds.

I can't believe I just can't

Yeah, the song about his girl having relations with an African American fellow was both hilarious and shocking at the same time.

He was the first person to release "Tennessee Whiskey"
34 years before Chris Stapleton.

To say he was only known for one song is sad. You don't know what you missed.

No confusion. DAC has a whole collection of them. They are equivalent to modern day rap but obviously way worse cause he's white.

Although he had trouble with the whites while in prison because he had too many black friends. So there's that. Maybe his songs were a reflection of the world in which he lived.

I've read where he defended the song. He said his songs were a performance similar to an actor in a movie. He didn't draw a distinction between an actor playing a racist role in a film and him performing on stage as a racist character.

I agree with the comparison to a point, but I'm not sure all of his fan base saw the distinction.

Can somebody go over the mental gymnastics needed to label an entertainer/politician a racist?

Jimmy and Corn Pop would like to know.
I hope I did not offend anybody with this post. If I did, please come see me at my address in my profile so we can talk.

Yep
I heard a lot of those songs in the '80s. As someone who grew up in a strict Christian household, it took me by surprise, To say the least.

I have a couple of DAC stories. This is the short one-

I worked in a music store in Odessa in the early to mid 90s, and he and his band were playing in Midland and rolled into the store. We had an Ibanez Gem in stock that we called the Wedding Guitar. All white with intricate tree of life inlay down the fretboard. And of course the Steve Vai handle. A total hard rock/heavy metal machine. DAC saw it and bought it without even plugging it in.

The other story is much longer, lots of words. Maybe I'll post it after I wake up.

I always looked at it like how a fighter gets announced what gym he's fighting out of.

Kind of like how Jim Heath is from Corpus Christi and Jimbo Wallace is from Deer Park but - Reverend Horton Heat is from Dallas, Texas.

Today, I'd be a Puerto Rican fighter, fighting out of Galveston, Texas.
