Long overdue...but can you imagine the bloodbath if these schools were required to be co-signers on any student loan? They would actually have to place a value on all of the majors that they offer.

Quote:

Penn State University may slash 49 of its undergraduate majors this fall, a recommendation announced this week as part of on-going cost cutting assessments at the public institution.
The proposed cuts would phase out low enrollment majors, affecting about 900 students, WJAC reports.
"Higher education is changing, and we must rise to the occasion," Provost Fotis Sotiropoulos told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a statement.

"A full accounting of our academic offerings, and a commitment to an ongoing cycle of program reviews moving forward, are critical parts of the work we all must do to position our students, and Penn State, for long-term success," Sotiropoulos said.

Programs that could be cut include education, liberal arts, science and technology, and earth and mineral sciences majors, according to the report.

Curious as to what in these groups would be cut.

cant find a list anywhere online of what programs, but did find an article that said several currently have 0 enrollment

I doubt any of its science programs, so axe away

I remember back in the mid 80's a Baylor geology grad told me that there were like 5 whole students majoring in geology at the time.

good start, but of course they won't reduce the cost of tuition along with it

Squadron7: Howdy, and Wow! I did know a Baylor Geology grad in Midland in the 70's to 90's. One of only two or three BU Grads I ever met, had NO idea Baylor even taught Geology, and judging by his success or lack there of, I guess they really did not!

You would be wrong. The article will take you to this page, and it's about halfway down. If you click the "review preliminary recommendations" button, it will download a spreadsheet that lists every major being considered for closure. Some are in sciences. Most are being axed because of low enrollment or degrees that are duplicates and/or are a better suited degree plan.

List of undergrad degrees:

https://www.psu.edu/academics/undergraduate/majors

Many of the majors are included in multiple Academic Pathways.

Recommended to "Close" by the Department --

Science:

Planetary Science and Astronomy (BS)

Information Sciences and Technology:

Information Sciences and Technology (BS)
Security and Risk Analysis (BS)

University College (I believe this is the PSU main campus?):

Communication Arts and Science (BA)
Integrative Science (BS)
Mining Technology (AS)
Engineering (BS) --> (SHIFT the Engineering and Mechanical Engineering (bachelor's) programs into a single, flexible Mechanical Engineering program; this is what students, parents and industry ask for.)
Surveying Engineering (BS)
Electrical Engineering Technology (AENGT --> Associates in Engineering Tech)

The list is available here: https://provost.psu.edu/appr/

The science and technology programs closing are mostly realignment to industry demand under other existing programs. Most of the other closures appear to be a BA or associate degree in various "Studies". Even a lot of those are noted as having overlap with existing or in-development programs.

They'll most likely be things we would not consider part of those classifications.

I'm a Texas RPLS. That Surveying Engineering program is one of only 35 ABET accredited surveying degrees. Most states have a path to licensure that is easiest with an ABET degree but none that I'm aware of require it. Most surveyors get licensed with a related science degree and some surveying course work. Pennsylvania is actually one of the easier states as far as what they require and I doubt that delivered a lot of value. The shift to a certificate makes a lot more sense.

Make the loans, like every other business loan, dischargeable in bankruptcy.... you wouldnt need to pass a single other piece of legislation or reform, it would all self right itself in about 3 yrs

I've been saying this for years: if you want to forgive student loans, go ahead. BUT, you have to put the colleges on the hook for much of that money. Some of it didn't go to them, but the costs increase over the last few decades drove up the loan amounts substantially.

I think by the time I graduated in the early 90s, I was one of about 9 geology department grads in my class level. My wife was the only geophysics undergrad at her class level. She had a bunch of 1 on 1 classes with geophysics profs and several more that were just her and 2-3 grad students. The geosciences had a resurgence after that with the rebirth of the domestic O&G industry (led by innovations like 3d seismic, horizontal drilling, and fracking), but it was a very nearly dead department for a few years.

Won't happen because if you let the market decide, you would never get a student loan for most liberal arts. Gender studies majors would disappear. And the college professors would be unemployed.
If the majors disappear from college, why teach them in schools?
if you don't teach them in schools, where are you going to indoctrinate kids to vote for the Democrat party?
