The company just announced they are shutting down operations after 34 years of service. They were not able to reach a deal to avoid liquidation after their second bankruptcy in the last year. There was no workable option for a government bail out. They were struggling before the war but the recent cost pressures pushed them over the edge.

Approximately 17,000 people will lose their jobs.

They have completed their last public passenger flight and are now working to get crews back to their home cities.

Trump wanted to make a deal but wanted the US to take a huge share and be first in line to be paid back. The other lenders would not approve.

Good, I wouldn't want my money lost trying to save the shareholders here from the consequences of terrible management at Spirit over the years.

BTW, politically let's remember glorious Pete bragging about blocking a merger with Jet Blue they tried to pull off, to 'protect consumer choice':

Spirit passenger cabins are already a flagrant violation of UN human rights treaties. The Trump administration doesn't need to do something like deporting them on Spirit jets because that would just generate more sympathy for the deportees.

Glad we are not on the hook for it but Democrats can be partially blamed for this failure. I never understood denying this merger not that I really cared in the first place.

Between the loss of them and the oil situation a lot of people that could before simply won't be able to travel. That could have an impact

I know f16 likes to go lolpoors when it comes to Spirit but they did provide something that allowed people to travel, be it vacation, see family etc. Problem is they had terrible leaderships and the Dems blocked the merger. I am glad that the government is not purchasing them though

Hey, most of Spirit's flights and gate slots (and planes, perhaps) will be picked up by other airlines. Life goes on. Ironically, Jetblue will be one of the ones that may pick over the carcass. If they can avoid the same fate.

Looks like at least SWA & United are providing capped airfares for stranded spirit passengers over the next couple weeks. Guess there'll be an influx of spirt folks on mainline carriers for a while, what could go wrong?
