I mean, hantavirus is scary as ***** That's one of the ones you get and you probably die.

But you really need to inhale desiccated infected rodent crap, so unless you are in the desert southwest you almost never run into it.

Wrong and wrong.
Y'all really need to start reading threads before posting.

Some passengers from that ship are now in the United States: Georgia, Arizona, and California. No symptoms reported.

This report is not very clear. Were these passengers on the ship when people were getting sick?

Quote:

American officials said on Wednesday that residents in three states were being monitored for potential hantavirus infections after being aboard a Dutch cruise ship where there was a deadly outbreak of the virus. None of the people being monitored have shown signs of illness, the officials said.

Since April 11, three passengers who were aboard the MV Hondius have died and five other people have been sickened after showing symptoms of the hantavirus, a rare family of viruses carried by rodents, according to the World Health Organization.

In the United States, at least three states are monitoring residents who were aboard the ship but have since returned home.

The Georgia Department of Public Health is monitoring two residents, it said in a statement. They "are currently in good health and show no signs of infection," the department said, and they are following recommendations from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The California Department of Public Health was notified by the C.D.C. that California residents had been on the MV Hondius as well, said Robert Barsanti, a spokesman for the department. The agency is assisting local health authorities with monitoring, he said, but did not disclose how many residents were under monitoring. "There is no information that the California residents are ill or infected," Mr. Barsanti said. "At this time, the risk to public health in California is low."

The Arizona Department of Health Services received notification that one resident was a passenger on the ship, according to a spokeswoman. "This individual is not symptomatic and is being monitored," she added.

Hantavirus isn't Covid. I have a Boston Terrier that will kill any rodent that dares to wander into our yard. She has at least 12 confirmed kills between rats, squirrels, and rabbits.

I have a pit that has taken out numerous rodents, neighborhood cats, and a few small dogs. I ain't worried about

The ship left Argentina on 4-1, and Argentina, along with Chile, is where the virus is known to reside.

In a recent study of the contiguous United States, Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers found that the risk of disease from hantavirus is higher in drier, underdeveloped geographic areas with more socioeconomic vulnerability and increased numbers of unique rodent species. This is the first study to examine the combined effects of multiple variables including socioeconomic, environmental, land use and rodent species to determine which are most likely to predict the risk of people contracting hantavirus.

Yet another disease that will ultimately be found to disproportionally affect the poor and require massive government spending to acquire the resources (i.e. - votes) necessary to "fix" the problem. Probably worse for minorities, women, children, and the LGBQWERTY+++ crowd as well. How do these viruses know?

I have been on the sister ship going from Ushuaia to NZ. Although expensive because of inclusive helicopter trips it was far from luxurious. It was very clean and I would do it again. No balconies, just portholes so isolation would be tough.
Surprised Tristan de Cuna allowed disembarking. Limited hospital facilities and the extreme isolation could jeopardize the islanders. We were not allowed into the country during Covid.

This probably has to do with rat transmission, not what happened on the ship. People that live in filth are more likely to get that. This one is different.

I'm not sure it's some major surprise that a virus that spreads via dry rat poop ends up infecting more poor people. Not making any policy arguments here, but yeah pretty much in every way being poor is worse for your health.

Our BT female is 6 now, a few years ago we bought a Frenchton from the same breeder and he is thick and chubby like his Frenchie dad so not much of a pest killer. Our BT will spend hours laying on the top of our sofa looking out the window into our back yard watching for squirrel activity. If one gets close enough to the ground she will bolt out the doggie door and make a run at them. Our Frenchton Bubba will just stick his head out the doggie door and watch the action then go back to playing with himself.

When we had that major freeze in TX 4 or 5 years ago
Rats showed up looking for warmth I suppose and I saw a couple go into my smoker. I opened the lid and forced them out and she took them out pretty quickly.

The cruise company would like you to believe differently, but I'm guessing at the end of the day they find that boat had a rat problem…

Seeing 2 troubling reports.....

#1 - supposedly 23 passengers left the cruise early (before Johannesburg) and dispersed all over the world, including 7 to all corners of the US. So far TX, VA, CA, AZ & GA govts monitoring.
#2 - the remaining passengers are NOT being forced to quarantine in place. They are supposedly being sent to their country of origin to be dealt with

I see the virus enthusiasts (fka Branch Covidians) are back and hoping for another pandemic.

Same crap we saw on the original WuFlu thread from January to March. People almost giddy about the idea of it happening again.

I don't think that picture is an accurate reflection of the area. Not saying it wasn't potentially nasty, but Ushuaia is way, way down in Tierra del Fuego and the town is on the coast.

If that pic is from Ushuaia, congrats to the photog getting the worst pic possible.

If one assumes all ocean cruises are so called Petri dishes not sure river voyages are the answer particularly when you see boats stacked along side each other with folks traipsing from one boat to another. Actually the Hondius would be the perfect size, 175 people which is about the same as river boats. I would never go on a boat with over let's say 500 people

The site they visited was a garbage dump in a third world country so I would imagine it looked pretty similar to the one in the picture.

Hard to find info specifically on the Andes variant as it is far less common but there is a general 40% mortality for the hantavirus across ALL age groups. General hantavirus is considered more common among 20-60yos but that is primarily because the stats are based on the rodent to people variants and people 20-60 make up the working class that would be more likely to be exposed.
