I don't think that picture is an accurate reflection of the area. Not saying it wasn't potentially nasty, but Ushuaia is way, way down in Tierra del Fuego and the town is on the coast.

If that pic is from Ushuaia, congrats to the photog getting the worst pic possible.

The site they visited was a garbage dump in a third world country so I would imagine it looked pretty similar to the one in the picture.

Never drink the trash can punch anywhere. Don't know what you're really getting!

Argentina is far from third world.

And I went and looked at satellite images of the area and did brief looking into it.

Now, whether it was still a good idea to visit? No idea though even then bird watching, in my observation not participation, is a distance activity.

Got in my family sized order of horse paste earlier this week. Applications started this morning, family will be just as protected as during the Covid Flu but those who aren't taking ivermectin should wear their masks.

This probably has to do with rat transmission, not what happened on the ship. People that live in filth are more likely to get that. This one is different.

The cruise company would like you to believe differently, but I'm guessing at the end of the day they find that boat had a rat problem…

I seriously doubt the boat was the source.

Again, two of the three that died were a couple who were bird watchers that had been with a group in Argentina to a friggin' LANDFILL to watch the birds. I understand those two are suspected to be the source of the virus on the ship.

https://www.the-sun.com/news/16326030/landfill-town-rat-virus-outbreak/

News program this morning showed footage from the landfill. Lots of birds flying around.

And yes, the photo being discussed was posted in the article as well. The news clip I saw this morning was an aerial video of the actual landfill with a ton of birds. Point being, that's what's drawing birdwatchers to the area - not the "filth" of the locale.

Im sorry, are those horses in the landfill or is this a Benjamin Knox version?

That's how you know its fake. No gauchos on the horses serving skewers of fire roasted meats.

From AI:

Landfills in Argentina, particularly the Ushuaia landfill in Tierra del Fuego, have become unconventional but popular bird-watching hotspots because they attract rare Patagonian species that are difficult to find elsewhere..

  • Rare Species: You can often spot the White-bellied Seedsnipe, a high-altitude bird that descends to these areas.
Now is the White-bellied Seednipe a common sea gull? No Idea.

Seeing 2 troubling reports.....

#1 - supposedly 23 passengers left the cruise early (before Johannesburg) and dispersed all over the world, including 7 to all corners of the US. So far TX, VA, CA, AZ & GA govts monitoring.
#2 - the remaining passengers are NOT being forced to quarantine in place. They are supposedly being sent to their country of origin to be dealt with

Now seeing reports of 29 (some saying as high as 40) from 12 different countries that left when they were docked at St Helena.

Not surprisingly, the Secretary of Eugenics and Preventable Diseases had a hand in this (no, not the cartoon villain Fauci who lives rent free in people's heads, but the guy who actually is responsible for death by disease).

Tell me about it. My mother was an avid birdwatcher, so I got to endure all sorts of excited stories about random-sounding bird names that she saw on one of her Audubon trips or bird counts. I had zero interest in the stories, but I got a ton of them.

Birdwatchers will go to great lengths to see that one bird that they've never seen that they want to.

Hantavirus isn't Covid. I have a Boston Terrier that will kill any rodent that dares to wander into our yard. She has at least 12 confirmed kills between rats, squirrels, and rabbits.

Gene Hackman and his wife had a dog, as well.

They had dogs but didn't have a Brindle Coated Assassin like this protecting the yard.

I'm not concerned about the Hantavirus, I've got 2 cats who are fairly proficient at killing the stinking Deer mice that carry it.

I'm much more concerned about the bark beetle infestation that is killing about 80% of the Pinon pines here in NM. 10's of thousands of acres of dead standing trees just waiting for a spark to start huge wildfires. Ugghh.

Edit, forgot acres.

Ushuaia is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Granted only visited in the winter but not sure any "dump" anywhere on the planet will look noticeably different than any other.

What TdF might have that others don't could be opportunistic native species found nowhere else that won't pass up a free meal even if provided by humans.

A dump in east Texas behind the pines will have a ton of birds but no wild Andean condors

Kennedy was always in my mind the worst appointment Trump made.

Those inspectors are not even funded by taxpayers. They are funded by the cruise lines.

I have been on the sister ship going from Ushuaia to NZ. Although expensive because of inclusive helicopter trips it was far from luxurious. It was very clean and I would do it again. No balconies, just portholes so isolation would be tough.
Surprised Tristan de Cuna allowed disembarking. Limited hospital facilities and the extreme isolation could jeopardize the islanders. We were not allowed into the country during Covid.

This thing seems to me to spread a lot more easily than only with "prolonged" contact.

The wife of the first victim who died was put aboard a KLM flight while she was very sick (she later died). She was so sick they took her off after an hour.

They are testing one of the flight attendants to see if she has it.

They have let 30-40 people leave the ship already and go to 12 countries.

They are planning to let everyone else off the ship as well.

If something with this type mortality rate starts to really spread...you won't need to tell people to social distance or "stay in their homes".

If it spread that easily it would have already depopulated South America. This variant has been known since 1995 at least.

I know, I guess my point was just they if there is ever a REAL outbreak (like in the movies), with high mortality rate that spreads easily, the government won't need to tell anyone with half a brain what to do, we will react accordingly. Covid was so forced and idiotic.

Hope you're right. (THAT's an understatement!)

In 2019 there was a single person in Argentina who attended a party of about 100 people while infected (fever and malaise) and began an event that eventually infected 34 people in four different "waves." Eleven died.

This spreading event stopped only when authorities realized what was going on and forced infected people into isolation and advised those who had come in contact with someone infected to self-isolate.

Symptoms appeared as late as 40 days after contact.
