This is a great editorial in the WSJ by Justice Gorsuch

Quote:

Think of the Declaration of Independence as the nation's report card. How well do we live up to it?

Quote:

The Declaration of Independence is a short document, not much longer than this essay. Even so, it contains three ideas that shocked the world in 1776: Each of us is born equal; God grants us all inviolable rights, including the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; and "We the People" have the right to govern ourselves.

Those three ideas represent America's creed.

This is a really great editorial...

He points out how rare it is for a republic like ours to exist...

It's a good read...

Good read. Gorsuch is a real one. No doubt the greatest system ever created.

It's too bad our ruling class loves spending all of American's hard earned money on foreign engagements and boondoggle policies, that don't better the life of an average citizen, but make it harder to achieve the American Dream and of course, enriching themselves along the way. The system needs a reset.

Must be so painful for a democrat to even wrap their evil brains around these three ideas.

Great article, but I would argue that too few people truly understand the values upon which our republic was founded, nor do they truly understand how our government is designed to work. I've long been a proponent of making civics and basic economics/personal finance required high school courses. Too many one issue voters who are economically illiterate and allow social media to form their political views are a real problem for us.

You forgot the part of your critique where the government does all of that stuff in order to make the workers in the government richer through theft and graft.

All by design. The education system was hijacked almost 50 years ago.

These are required in Florida. Our students have to have a semester each of government and economics (I teach both at the regular and AP level). Starting with Class of '27, all students must also have a semester of personal finance in addition to Gov and Econ. Prior to that, personal finance was part of the standards I had to teach in Econ.

The problem is getting students to think about this stuff at the philosophical level. My students know the facts and structure of the government; getting them to understand the philosophical underpinnings and concepts is a whole different animal. Many that come to me either don't have the intellectual background or drive to think at that level, or they think they already know everything. Either way, it takes A LOT of chipping away at the walls the put up to get the concepts of our founding into their skulls. A good number of us are really trying.

Government and economics have been part of the high school curriculum in Texas at least since I was in high school in the '80s.

Economics =/= Personal Finance.
And just because a course exists doesn't mean it's being taught properly.
Our education system is in shambles.

Well crap, now I really feel old. Household budgeting was part of Home Ec classes I took in junior high.

I can deal with imperfect people, however, it is the extremists, irrational individuals, and radical anarchists that I find unacceptable.
